Welcome to a bumper special edition of your library news from East Sussex libraries. With children’s summer holidays upon us don’t forget to pop into your local library to get involved in everything we have to offer. Read on to find out what is happening for children in our libraries.

Summer Reading Challenge

Summer Reading Challenge

Lots of children will have seen a librarian at one of their school assemblies over the last few weeks, where they will have heard about this year’s Summer Reading Challenge: The Big Friendly Read.

 

Pop into any East Sussex library today and sign up to the Challenge.  As long as children leave themselves enough time to read 6 books throughout the summer holidays then they can sign up any time before 10 September.

Childrens' events in libraries this summer

Jimmy the Juggling Jester

Throughout the summer our libraries will be hosting lots of activities for children to get involved with. From arts and crafts to children’s entertainers, you’ll be sure to find something to enjoy.

 

Thursday 28 JulyFrom 3pm Seaford library will be

formally unveiling the eye-catching new bench created by artist Peter Yarwood, and inviting children to get involved with creating designs and new words inspired by the bench, in the style of Roald Dahl. The words and pictures will be displayed in the library throughout the summer.

 

Saturday 30 July – Jimmy the Juggling Jester is visiting Eastbourne library from 11am – 12pm and Bexhill library from 2pm to 3pm, where children will be able to get involved with circus workshops. No need to book just turn up and take part.

 

Look out for our Dahl’s Delights stories and craft sessions for children of 5+ years.  Our librarians will be running the events at Crowborough, Newhaven and Seaford libraries.

The Dogs’ Trust will be visiting our libraries over the summer.  You can find out what they do and have fun with doggy themed stories and crafts at some of our libraries.

 

This is just a snapshot of events we have going on throughout July and August, and there will be plenty more activities in libraries over the next few weeks. Why not pop into your local library to see what is going on?

Reading Room

East Sussex libraries have a great selection of e-library resources for children. From our library webpages you can download children’s e-books, e-audiobooks (great for keeping kids entertained on long car journeys) and even children’s e-magazines. You’ll even find a kids collection, where all our children’s e-books can be found in one place.


Latest childrens’ book award winners

Ali Sparkes

Recently, childrens’ books have won many prestigious awards including our Schools Library and Museum Service’s own East Sussex Children’s Book Award. Why not encourage your children to read one of these?

 

Car-Jacked by Ali Sparkes was the winner of the East Sussex Children’s Book Award, suitable for children aged 9-11. Find out who else made it onto the shortlist this year.

For those rainy days why not rent a children’s DVD to keep them entertained? From the latest blockbusters to classics, all of our libraries have a great selection of children’s DVDs. Including the film adaptations of Roald Dahl’s: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Esio Trot.
