Simple steps for flood prevention
As the season changes, we are pulling on warmer socks and suggesting some simple actions which may help reduce the impact of the worsening weather.
- Falling autumn leaves are beautiful but they can quickly clog up gutters and drains. Setting aside time to safely check and clear drainage around the outside of your home can prevent damage and flooding as the weather worsens.
- Could your property be at risk of flooding? You can check in less time than it takes to make a cup of tea. Free flooding alerts are available via text, phone or email. Sign up for flood warnings.
- In an emergency, could you find your insurance details, medication info or the number for the friend who could pick your child up from school? Filling out the free template ensures you can react quickly. Keep a hard copy and store online.
- If you own land next to a ditch, stream or brook then it is your responsibility to ensure it stays clear of debris such as silt, leaves and branches, so water can drain away. This is essential for preventing surface water flooding. Watch this short video which explains how to clear your ditch.
Your suggestions for the local heritage list
Nominations are open for the local heritage list. You can nominate buildings, statues, memorials, sculptures, walls or pieces of street furniture. Parks and gardens can also be nominated to join other locally well-known places on the list including: Molesey Boat Club, 100 West Grove in Hersham and the Foley Arms in Claygate.
Garden waste update
We are working on running a one-off catch-up garden waste collection service at the start of November. We will confirm if this will happen by 19 October.
Help for those with dementia
Our dementia services team provides a much loved service to people living with dementia and is working hard to welcome clients back to social clubs at Thames Ditton and Walton Centres for the Community. The team aims to provide support as long as it's needed.
