About the roles:
Planning in East Devon is exciting and diverse, including major housing and employment developments in and around the new town of Cranbrook, Exeter Airport and the west of the District where we adjoin Exeter City. East Devon also includes large areas of AONB, the World Heritage Jurassic Coast and many historic market towns and villages. Our ambition is to be an outstanding planning service which works together with local people to create an outstanding community, economy and environment for East Devon, now and for future generations. Working within our friendly and supportive Development Management team you'll play a key role in this, assisting us to deal with over 2,500 planning or related applications a year ranging from householder applications to much larger scale developments within the district. You'll assist with processing applications, including undertaking site visits, assessing proposals, negotiating with applicants and agents, and preparing writing reports with reasoned justifications and recommendations.
About you:
You'll either be a Degree qualified Planner with experience in a similar role and a good knowledge of UK planning legislation, or if you're an aspiring Planner looking for a career development opportunity, you'll have a good level of education, ideally with a degree or equivalent in Planning or related subject (or working towards a relevant qualification). You should also have excellent organisational and time management skills, and attention to detail is key. Excellent communication skills are also essential and you will need to be able to demonstrate a high level of tact and diplomacy and be able to negotiate effectively with customers. You'll also need a driving licence and be able to travel as required (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act). About the role: The Council's Monitoring Officer is the corporate complaints officer. As part of a small team, you will provide support to the Monitoring Officer and the Housing service on all matters relating to housing complaints made against the Council. This will entail liaising with members of the public and the Local Government Ombudsman. You will also support the Monitoring Officer in achieving the priorities and outcomes of the Council. Day to day you will be responsible for logging and progressing housing and other complaints and requests for information.

You must also have the ability to work without supervision and use your own initiative, as you will be dealing with complaints and requests for information from members of the public on a daily basis. A valid driving licence and your own car are desirable (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).
