Democratic Services Manager

About the role:
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and organised Democratic Services Manager to manage our Democratic Services Team. In this interesting and varied role, you will have responsibility for ensuring the efficient and effective conduct of meetings of the Council, the Cabinet, Committees, Sub Committees and a range of other formal and diverse meetings. You will take responsibility for ensuring that all such meetings are properly called, co-ordinated and serviced as well as ensuring that the Council functions in an open and accountable way. A confident communicator, you will advise Council members and committees on correct procedures, relevant legislation including constitutional matters, and notify them of decisions taken and action to be followed. Excellent organisational and people management skills are essential in this role, as you will organise the work of the Democratic Services team to ensure tasks are completed as effectively and efficiently as possible. This will include the production of a weekly newsletter to keep Council members up to date, preparation of an annual programme of meetings and maintenance of elected member records. This is a politically restricted post under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 and therefore the post holder is disqualified from being a member of other local authorities, a Member of Parliament or a Member of the European Parliament. In addition the post holder must not hold office in a political party, canvas at elections or attempt to influence support in any other way for a political party.
About you:
With a good level of education, you will be an excellent communicator and confident working with a wide variety of stakeholders as you share information and advice with others on procedural issues and relevant legislation. Highly organised with excellent attention to detail, you will have experience of organising and servicing formal meetings (ideally within the Public Sector) and be able to produce high quality reports and communications for our members and Senior Officers. Experience of working in a local authority Democratic Services team is essential. You will occasionally need to be able to work out of office hours and attend evening meetings.

Local Government Governance Lawyer

About the role:
We are seeking a Local Government Governance Lawyer to join our talented legal team. This role will support the Director of Governance & Licensing and the Principal Solicitor to provide an efficient and effective Legal Service which protects the Council's interests, enables modern service delivery and reacts flexibly to provide a service tailored to client needs. In this interesting and varied role, you will provide legal advice to council officers, committees and outside bodies, across your specialist area as well as governance and public administration. About you:
You will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or equivalent and have up to date knowledge in any of the fields of litigation including judicial review, contract/procurement law, housing, licensing, administrative law, regulatory law and local authority governance as well as experience of preparing legal documentation. Experience of dealing with Code of Conduct complaints against members is also desirable. You will be a confident communicator with excellent negotiation skills and the ability to solve problems in a pragmatic and timely way. You must also be able to work co-operatively and supportively as part of a professional team and be able to manage conflicting priorities to deadlines.
