The fascinating history of Exeter Guildhall with Mace Sgt Davy Johnston
The fascinating history of Exeter Guildhall and the importance of the cloth trade to the city are explored in a BBC interview.
Mace Sergeant Davy Johnston spoke to Radio Devon’s Pippa Quelch to talk about his two historic roles in the city.
Davy was recently appointed as Beadle for Tuckers Hall. He will work in his new role for the Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen, the historic guild of Exeter’s ancient cloth trade.
Davy, who can usually be seen at the historic Guildhall and at civic occasions will continue with this job as Mace Sergeant alongside his new role. As Beadle he will take responsibility for the day-to-day running of Tuckers Hall, its free public access, celebratory events, dinners, hall hire and ceremonial events. This combination draws together the two Great Halls of Exeter.
