Proposed changes to Gildredge Road and bus stop locations

Have your say on the latest Eastbourne Town Centre Improvement Scheme (ETCIS) proposals for Gildredge Road and the placement of buses and bus stops. http://www.eastsussexhighways.com/etcis

Following the consultation exercises in 2013 and 2014, work commenced on the detailed design for the ETCIS. During the course of the Detailed Design process and through further liaison with Eastbourne bus operators in 2016 it was decided to propose the placement of west bound buses/stops in Gildredge Road not Cornfield Road as indicated in the initial design.

This has several benefits including:
• Promoting a pedestrian friendly environment along Terminus Road.  The stretch of Terminus Road between Ashford Road and Bankers Corner will only be accessible to buses and pedestrians. By redirecting all west bound buses into Gildredge Road we will be reducing traffic through this area by nearly 50%.

• Reduced traffic in this area will enable us to widen the footways further than previous proposals, creating improved pedestrian access and create more areas for seating and soft landscaping.

• We will be able to narrow the carriageway adjacent to Bankers Corner, further enhancing the opportunity to turn Bankers Corner into a location where public events can be held.

• Only east bound bus services will stop at Cornfield Road. This will significantly reduce vehicular movement in the area and give us the opportunity to further enhance planned seating areas and soft landscaping along this road.

• Locating west bound bus services in Gildredge Road ensures bus stops are closer to Eastbourne train station (opposed to their placement in Cornfield Road), enhancing the role of the station as a transport hub.

• West bound services will also be nearer the new entrance of the Arndale extension (once completed).

This consultation closes at midnight 3 July 2017.
