Ready, get set, go - the exciting new £26m Dover District Leisure Centre opened its doors on Monday 25 February, when 11-year-old Emily-Rose Evans cut the ribbon.

A plaque was unveiled yesterday (Monday 4 March) by Sir Hugh Robertson, Chairman of the British Olympic Association to officially mark the opening.

A Great Deal Of Investment

Imaginative new lighting, and a range of refurbishments are set to feature in a second phase of major improvements for Deal Pier.

New investment is to include work to refurbish the clock and art sculpture at the entrance, an electronic information screen, new lighting, enhancements to pier shelters, replacing CCTV, and concrete repairs to the structure. The second phase takes place over the next financial year.

New pier seating has been installed as part of the first phase of works, and the new Deal Pier Kitchen was officially launched on 4 January.

Landscape Restoration To Start At Kearsney Parks

A £1.4m programme of landscape restoration gets underway in March as part of the Heritage Lottery funded Kearsney Parks project.

A key part of the works is the restoration of Thomas Mawson's terraced landscape at Russell Gardens. Landscape works in Kearsney Abbey will see the recreation of an eye-catcher bridge across the ornamental lake.  Restoration of the Grade II listed former billiards room is well underway, along with construction of a new cafe extension.

Spring Into Action And Keep Recycling

With spring in the air, it's time to prepare for gardens to spring back to life, and time to renew or sign up for DDC's garden waste collections.  A licence costs £46 for a year, that's for up to 25 fortnightly collections, (with a break over Christmas). The new licence runs from April 2019 to March 2020.

DDC has thanked residents, as recycling rates continue to rise. With spring arriving, we've also been busy clearing litter and debris from our roadsides, and we are supporting the Great British Spring Clean, which runs from 22 March to 23 April.

Town Centre Business Grants Scheme

Grants continue to be made available under DDC's Town Centre Business Grants Scheme to help support local businesses.

An art gallery in Deal has been given a new splash of colour to help the bigger picture of regeneration in the district, after receiving a business grant under the scheme.

The scheme offers grants of up to £10,000 to bring commercial properties back into use, or to upgrade or improve the appearance of commercial properties in designated town centre areas in Dover, Deal and Sandwich.

DDC has also awarded its first grant under the Community Housing Grants Scheme.
