Coronavirus Doncaster: Update

Dr Rupert Sucking

Introduction

Hi I’m Dr Rupert Suckling, Director of Public Health in Doncaster.

This week has seen some significant milestones in our local Coronavirus response. Firstly, for the majority of the week our hospitals have reported 0 cases of COVID-19 being treated. We have also seen, for the first time this year, our case rates drop significantly below the national average, our current figures show our rates are 21.5 per 100,000 (from 23 to 29 May) compared to the England average of 32.5 per 100,000.

Local COVID data

Our vaccination programme has also continued at a pace – with almost 75% of the eligible Doncaster population having received their 1st dose and just under 50% of Doncaster residents now being fully vaccinated.

This is all great news, and I want to thank all of you for continuing to make safe choices in how you enjoy the relaxations of restrictions. It has been great to see families enjoying half term activities across the borough (including at our newly opening Danum Gallery and Museum) while being sensible and thinking about hands, face, space and fresh air. I urge everyone to carry on, and let’s try and get our figures even lower ahead of the decisions due around 21st June and step 4 of the roadmap.

Please remember the best way to protect yourself and the rest of Doncaster, is to continue with your weekly testing regimes, isolating when you need and getting your vaccination as soon as you can.

Let’s continue to do it for Doncaster.

Thank you.

Dr Rupert Suckling

Director of Public Health

A different kind of school test after half term

Don’t forget the extra item on the ‘to do’ list before schools go back after half term.

All secondary school students should be using Covid tests at home twice a week.

And parents of primary school children can do the same to provide that extra sense of reassurance for them and their family.

Get Tested Even if You've Been Vaccinated

Remember even if you’ve been vaccinated you can still spread Covid-19.

Regular testing can help provide reassurance for you, your family and your community.

Make Safer Choices this Weekend

We know it can be hard to keep the kids entertained over a weekend, especially after a full week off for half term, but whilst you're making plans it's also worth weighing up any possible Covid risks.

Making safer choices can help us keep our Covid rates as low as possible. And of course, when in doubt - stay out(side)!

Book Your Space at the Danum Library

Finally, the wait for lovely weather is over. Yippee!

If you have missed our Doncaster Central Library and want to borrow some books to read while basking in the sun or enjoying a spot of shade, we do have availability for the www.DGLAM.org.uk library tour (plus some tickets remain for the museum tour).

Whether you love the twists and turns of a suspense thriller, like a good biography, fancy taking up gardening or need to brush up on your astrophysics, you will find something of interest.

Just as a gentle reminder, if you’ve already pre-booked a ticket but can’t make it, please let us know. That way we can reallocate the ticket(s) so someone else can enjoy a tour round.
