Starting secondary school is a big step
At Café DG, we aim to make lunchtime simple.
Pupils can choose what they want each day. There is a wide range of hot meals, quick options and lighter choices.
A good value option
A school meal deal costs £2.40 and includes:
- a main meal (e.g. a hot meal or grab and go option)
- a drink
- a soup or a sweet
- free fruit and veggies
Packed lunches usually cost more and need to be prepared each day.
 School meals also offer:
- A balanced meal every day
- Greater variety across the week
- No making packed lunches every morning
- One less thing for you to think about
What goes into a school meal
School meals in Scotland must meet strict national standards set by the Scottish Government.
This means we carefully plan menus to make sure pupils get the right balance of nutrients across the week. There are limits on things like sugar, salt and processed foods, and requirements for fruit, vegetables and healthier options every day.
Our catering team follows these standards for every menu we create, so you can feel confident your child is getting a balanced meal at lunchtime.
Free school meals
If your child is eligible, they will receive a daily allowance of £2.40.
Pupils use their allowance by scanning their Young Scot Card or a QR code at the till, like contactless, so it looks the same as everyone else.
Your child’s lunchtime guide
Your child was given a Café DG booklet at school this week. It’s a quick guide to how lunchtime works and what they can expect.
