Active Communities
Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Active Communities programme delivers a range of activities or clubs which will encourage you to be more active, meet new people, do something new and have fun.
What is Gentle Movement? Classes involve low impact, seated activities which could include boccia (similar to French boules), shibashi/qigong movements, indoor curling, coordination activities or seated exercise to music.
What is Strength and Balance? Designed to support balance and mobility. Suitable for people unsteady on their feet, who are worried about falling or have had a fall. These classes are very low impact and mostly seated.
Stroll and Strength Walks are low mobility walks which include a short 20 minute walk and 10-15 minutes of strength and balance exercises. These walks are suitable for people who walk at a slower pace or perhaps use walking aids. The exercises are important for improving strength, balance, stamina, flexibility and can help prevent falls.
Walking groups are a supportive and welcoming way for you to start to enjoy the many benefits of being physically active.
We have a range of weekly walks available across Dumfries and Galloway and they are FREE to attend.
My journey with exercise: Living with a Frozen Shoulder
When I first heard the words “Frozen Shoulder” from my doctor, I thought it just meant stiffness. But I quickly learnt it’s a lot more than that. It’s pain limited movement, and the frustration of not being able to do simple things like reaching for a shelf, putting a jacket on, or even sleeping comfortably.
At first, I was scared to move it at all, worried I’d make things worse. But one of the most important lessons I’ve learnt is that gentle exercise is part of the healing process. It doesn’t mean pushing through sharp pain or forcing the shoulder. It means slow, steady kind movements that help loosen things up over time. I started Active Communities class in May at Dunscore on a Tuesday afternoon with Evan, 5 months ago, I go to two of his classes weekly. When I think about the progress I’ve made with these classes, I realise it hasn’t been a journey I’ve taken alone. What stands out most is that Evan has helped me see exercise is not just a task but as a way to grow stronger, not only physically, but also in discipline and self belief. His support has turned workouts so enjoyable, and different exercises each session.
Exercise hasn’t magically fixed my frozen shoulder overnight, but it’s helped me stay more mobile, reduce stiffness, and most importantly, I feel like I’m doing something positive for myself. And it’s all thanks to Evan at Active Communities.
