Over 3500 young people have taken part in term 3 (Jan – Dec) events… YES that’s right over 3500 took the opportunity to compete and perform in an activity they enjoy be it as an individual or as a team. As an Active Schools Team this is something that we are extremely proud to offer the Young People across our schools in Dumfries & Galloway. Our busiest term as seen tartan twirling at Jigs and Reels events, smashing good shots across all the Badminton events, determined feet crossing muddy trails at Cross Country and super 4’s and halls filled with excitement at sportshall athletics. We’ve also seen fast passes and strong defence in both netball and rugby events and some back flips, tumbles and vaults that wouldn’t look out of place on the Olympic Stage.
Medals, Certificates, Trophies and Big Smiles!!
Lots of smiles, lots of hi-vis, lots of volunteering at events by Young Leaders.
15 young leaders attended a Badminton Skills Course at The Merrick, Newton Stewart during the February mid term break led by the fabulous Anne Robertson. This is the first level of the Badminton Scotland coaching ladder and allowed our young choose to lead volunteers a chance to gain a certified qualification and give back to them for all the help they put in to our programmes.
We look forward to working with the Young People and supporting them coaching at future school and community clubs.
The fantatsic Anne Robertson leading the Young Leaders through Badminton Basics Course.

A fantastic 63% of our region schools are currently signed up and The Daily Mile recently celebrated that over £5million children are taking part worldwide.
Congratulations to Mr McClune from Kirkcudbright Primary School who has been asked to join the National Daily Mile Steering Group following his innovative way of engaging pupils to keep up their Daily Mile participation by using a QR code system. We are delighted Mr McClune has been offered and accepted this opportunity to join the steering group which is made up of teachers from across the 4 nations who will work together to share ideas and inspire more Daily Mile participation in schools. Please enjoy the following video taken at Kirkcudbright Primary - Mr McClune this looks so much fun!

Three S6 Sports Leader Pupils from Lockerbie Academy passed their Bikeability Scotland Instructor course. They received training as part of their coursework then followed up using their newly learnt skills taking the P7 pupils at Lockerbie Primary through Bikeability training.
Ross Laidlaw, Acting Depute HT from Lockerbie Primary said "The whole process was made really easy for the school and the instructors were fantastic with the pupils. Everything we asked for in terms of equipment was accommodated and that ensured all our pupils who wanted to could take part. It was a really successful and worthwhile experience for our pupils. Some parents have also emailed to say that they were delighted that this was offered to their children and that they got loads out of it. The parental information booklets were well received too."

Volunteers provide an integral part of providing sport and physical activity sessions to young people within our service, and we appreciate all those who give up their time to support Active Schools and Community Sport.
Karen Littlejohn & Katie Nolan - Gymnastics Volunteers at NWCC Primary
Throughout theyear, Katie Nolan and Karen Littlejohn have been giving up their time to volunteer at NWCC in Dumfries, supporting primary pupils in a weekly after school Gymnastics Club. Thanks to Katie and Karen’s hard work and commitment, North West Community Campus were able to enter 5 teams and 2 individuals, across 3 different levels, into this year’s Regional Gymnastics Competition at DG1. It was a memorable and valuable experience for all the children involved and the school are extremely grateful to them.
Huge congratulations to Karen who has recently passed her Level 1 Gymnastics Coaching too... great achievement.
This is our amazing volunteer Courtney who recently supported the delivery of a 4week block of Boccia with Jamie from the Active Schools Team. The pupils loved having Courtney volunteering at the club and Jamie appreciated the support, time and effort Courtney gave him.

GOLDEN GAMES | Dalbeattie High School lead the way for intergenerational physical activity development.
We are delighted to be working in partnership with our Active Communities Colleagues who have been supporting senior pupils from Dalbeattie High School to deliver the ‘Golden Games’ programme at Munches Park House care home.
Karen Robertson, Physical Activity Officer for Adults and Older People worked with the senior PE pupils as part of their leadership programme. Together with fantastic support from PE Teacher Mr Drennan and John Muir from Active Schools the pupils learnt how to deliver the 10 Golden Games functional mobility challenges. The pupils followed up their training by visiting Munches Park working with the care home participants delivering the Golden Games programme.
This is a wonderful partnership which allows the pupils to gain experience delivering physical activity to older people, but it all allows some fantastic interaction between care home residents and our wonderful young people.
The Upper Nithsdale Netball Club is a fabulous example of a pathway created by volunteers who are passionate about giving opportunities to girls in the local Thornhill area.
There is now a full pathway in place for girls to play at Primary school led by Mrs Marchant (teacher and parent at Wallace Hall) who delivers regular after school netball sessions with the pathway into secondary community netball sessions now established as part of the Upper Nithsdale Netball Club. The club has been supported by their local Active Schools Co-Ordinator along the way to become a self-sufficient, independent constituted club run entirely by volunteers. What a brilliant opportunity for girls in the local area to go from playing netball at school to club netball.
Newington Primary School celebrating their Gold Sports Awards Status
SPORTSCOTLAND SCHOOL SPORTS AWARD
We have a number of schools across the region heading towards receiving their GOLD sports awards status this year!
Newington Primary pictured above, received their GOLD award last summer and a former pupil Finlay Waugh who is now a Scottish Internationalist in Athletics came into the school to present the award. Finlay started his athletics career when he was at Newington and fondly remembers the sprint relay and our other Active Schools events which inspired him to take up athletics.
