Events at Dumfries Museum
There will be a series of free events in Dumfries Museum as part of The Wild Goose Festival.
Monday 23rd October – From 7pm
Witchcraft, Women and Birds
Free talk with Museums Curator, Judith Hewitt and a chance to explore ‘The Women of Dumfries’ exhibition
There are a lot of links between women and birds - especially if the women were unconventional, non-conforming or held unorthodox spiritual views. This talk will touch on fairy tales, ancient myths and legends, the folklore of Dumfries and Galloway, witchcraft accusations and folk magic practices that involve birds, feathers and eggs.
And of course, we'll discuss why 'witches' were believed to be able to fly.
Thursday 26th October – From 7pm
Birds of the River Nith with Stephen Rutt
Using the museum’s recently refreshed taxidermy displays as a starting point, award winning nature writer Stephen Rutt will explore what they can tell us about the River Nith and what the river can tell us about the range of birds that make their home in its range of habitats.
An installation of flying geese by local artist Jay Rubinstein will also be on display in Dumfries Museum throughout October.
