Introduction

It’s a busy time of year attracting people to careers in health and social care with events across Devon.  A number of our Proud to Care Ambassadors have said that they feel more confident promoting jobs at a job stand, rather than facilitating a group exercise in a classroom.  We’re keen to support you to develop your confidence and an ideal opportunity is to attend one of our “Communicate with Confidence” events in Exeter, Cullompton or Newton Abbot in November 2019.  You’ll learn how to attract people to the health and care sector and to develop activities, which are engaging and fun. There’ll be warm exercises to settle your nerves and you’ll learn about body language, first impressions and making an impact.  The skills you learn will be beneficial to you both as an Ambassador and in your day-to-day role.

For further information, please see the “Training Opportunities” section below.

Workforce Development Commissioning update

Great feedback! Managers who have attended the FUNDED Leadership Development workshops commissioned by Devon County Council, have stated how they have helped them to further develop their setting’s procedures and practices. The workshops are being delivered in: Okehampton, Bideford, Newton Abbot and Honiton until March 2020. Times, venues, booking details and eligibility criteria can be found on COSMIC website: https://www.cosmic.org.uk/careworkshops

A working group of adult social care providers and DCC have developed a Care Induction Framework to support managers with care induction/care certificate training, to include links to free resources to support eLearning and face-to-face delivery. The Care Certificate Observation Record provides a template for managers to capture the practice of inductees via observation. Both documents can be modified to suit individual service needs. The next phase of this project is to develop a Nominated Care Certificate Assessor Training programme. If you would like to be involved in the co-production of this programme with other providers, please join us at our meeting on Thursday 10th October 2-4pm, Larkbeare House, Topsham Road, Exeter EX2 4NG. Email Terrie.Chaplin@Devon.gov.uk to confirm your attendance or for more information.

When time and capacity is tight, then new technology is not always at the forefront of a manager’s mind.  The Digital Business and New Technology workshop is on 10th October, in Honiton and is part of the DCC-funded Leadership Development Programme. The workshop will introduce social care managers and leaders to a host of useful devices and software suggestions and managers who have attended previous workshops said:

“Head buzzing!  Very informative, learning about the future and what tools are out there”

“Simple explanations, inexpensive solutions”

“Lots of information about digital (and) what to download free for the home”.

Book your place via  https://www.cosmic.org.uk/careworkshops

Nursing Associate – Devon County Council is currently developing a proposal to introduce the role of student Nursing Associates into the adult social care workforce in Devon’s private, voluntary and independent sector. Plans to launch Action Learning Sets during October and November 2019 across Devon. To express an interest, please contact terrie.chaplin@devon.gov.uk
