For Action | Attendance of Children in Care
Message from
Ian Hemelik - Virtual School Headteacher
To all Headteachers / Principals
We are concerned that recently school attendance of Children in
Care has declined.
To address this issue we ask that:
-
Our VS Administrator, Kate Clarke (kate.clarke@devon.gov.uk) is notified when the attendance level for any Child in Care
drops below 95%. This information will be passed to our Area
Learning Advocates who will follow this up with the relevant Social Worker.
- When a Child in Care fails to arrive for school on any given
day, that you contact their Foster Carer, on the same day, to ascertain the
reason for non-attendance.

DCFP Education Advisory Group
Meeting | 14 May 2018
Feedback to
schools from the recent DCFP Education Advisory Group meeting included :-
School Nursing Core Offer
In response to changes
in the national funding for local health there are major changes to the school
nursing core offer for 2018-19. This is the last year of the contract with
Virgin Care ahead of DCC resuming responsibility for School Nursing and Health
Visitors from 2019.
There is only funding
for 35 schools nurses across Devon and the work will be targeting:
- supporting
schools to meet the needs of individual children who have an identified
medical need or where the school feels there be an identified need.
- providing
support for SRE teaching and guidance and support of identified children
at KS2-5.
These proposals will
be shared with school leaders via a survey in the very near future.
Elective Home Education DfE
Consultation
The national
consultation on Elective Home Education (EHE) is currently open. Legislation
hasn’t changed since 1984 and recently there has been a significant increase in
EHE in Devon (521 children 2012/13 to 1275 2016/17) which is continuing to
rise. The DfE recognises there are many reasons for this and are proposing
significant changes including requirements for all EHE children to be
registered with a LA; introducing statutory monitoring duties for the LA; and
specifying safeguarding CPD & qualifications required by all private tutors.
Schools welcome to submit own
response by 02/07/18. Access the consultation via this L I N K
DCC are submitting a corporate response, schools
wishing to contribute should do so by 14 June 2018 to Emma.Hitchins@babcockinternational.com
