Reminders

Funding Challenges in Devon Schools

Have you written to your Local MP and Councillor?

Thank you to everyone who has sent a copy of their 'Funding Challenges in Devon Schools' letter - see previous DAPH Update newsletter dated 8 December 2016 outlining the collective campaign to highlight the funding crisis in Devon schools.

A reminder for schools to also send a copy of their letter to the DAPH office at daph@devon.gov.uk so that a central library of all letters written by Devon Schools can be compiled.  Thank you.

Reminder  |  Section 175/157 Safeguarding Annual Audit

Back in September, Babcock LDP distributed this year’s audit to schools and settings. In response to feedback, this year’s audit is on an Excel spreadsheet which will enable designated safeguarding leads to save and share it with colleagues. As in previous years, if the audit is not completed fully it will be returned. Please do not submit hard copies. The deadline for completion is 31 December 2016. A 100% return has been achieved for the last three years, but a lot of time is spent chasing schools which have not responded by the deadline, so please complete and return promptly.

Any questions about the audit should be sent to Louisa.rockey@babcockinternational.com

Child Sexual Abuse Survey

Sent on behalf of Philippa Geddes – DSCB Board Manager

One of the priorities for the Devon Safeguarding Children Board  (DSCB) for 2016-17 is Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). The DSCB wants to know more about the current level of understanding  of CSA across the workforce in Devon. We would therefore encourage you to spend 10 minutes completing the survey to help inform the important work around Child Sexual Abuse and improve outcomes for children in Devon.

You can access the survey here:  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/VG5G5R3  The survey will run until Monday January 9th 2017.

Should you have any questions about the survey please contact the DSCB business unit at safeguardingchildrensboardsecure-mailbox@devon.gcsx.gov.uk

New Approach to Child Protection

The Devon Safeguarding Children Board has fully endorsed a new approach to child protection planning. This approach will build much more explicitly on the risks faced by children and a clear identification of the strengths and assets within a family that can be harnessed to help reduce those risks  |  READ MORE

CAP UK

CAP UK  |  chosen charity at the DAPH Annual School Leadership Conference 2016

Message from Rose Vallance | CAP UK Exeter Team Leader | safestrongfree.org.uk

"I just wanted to say thank you to the Devon Association of Primary Heads for all your support this year, especially as we have launched the Child Assault Prevention Project in Exeter and the surrounding area".

"We have had a fantastic response from schools and are booked through to December 2017, so our next spaces are January 2018. We are absolutely delighted with this response. I am sure we are all only too well aware, yet again and in light of the recent situation within footballing, of children and young people not having permission, or the words, or the understanding that they could say 'no' to an unsafe situation and get help.  Only now as adults. We know of course, that this position continues".

"During 2015-16, CAP UK delivered workshops in 40 school communities and we are very much looking forward to working with many more as we extend the project".

"Thank you so much for all your support.  We hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and New Year".

What's New

HMRC Tax Education Programme  |  Junior Tax Facts

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has recently launched a new tax education programme for primary school children, aged 8 to 11.

Junior Tax Facts explains to children, in very simple terms, what tax is and why it is needed - to provide the money to pay for the things that‎ are essential to them, their families, communities and society as a whole.

The programme consists of a short animated video, available on YouTube or on DVD, supported by a comprehensive teachers' pack, with lesson plans and interactive exercises, available to view or download from the TES website. If teachers would prefer to receive the video on DVD, please email HMRC at hmrc.taxeducation@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk to request as many copies as are needed (all the material, including DVDs, is available free of charge).
