DAPH Update: Summer Term | 19 July 2016 | Issue 5

DAPH UPDATE

   Summer Term  |  19 July 2016  |  Issue 5

Message from Paul Walker, DAPH Chair

Unbelievably it is the end of yet another academic year. This has been one of most unsettled years in education with the massive changes to the assessment system. During the year we have also received the new white paper, detailing proposals for reform. We have then had ‘U’ turns, half a funding consultation and most recently a change in leadership both for the country and, perhaps most relevant to us, within the DfE.

Change is something that we are well versed in education, we have a lot of change happening in our own schools all the time. At this time of the year we will be saying goodbye to our eldest children and farewell to a number of colleagues. Last week I attended a special event to mark the retirement of a number of Devon headteachers, many of whom have been in Devon for many years. In particular, I would like to mention Sue Nield and Jan Baker.  Both are retiring from headship. Both also gave up many hours of their time to support DAPH over the years, thanks you to both of them. To all headteachers leaving this term, good luck in your next phase!

We are also saying a fond farewell to Sue Clarke, Head of Education and Learning at DCC.  Sue has been in education for nearly forty years, starting her career in London, latterly as a headteacher before moving down to Devon. Sue started her work here as an adviser for DCS before moving to DCC to lead the Exeter school reorganiation. Many colleagues now work in federations and partnerships, largely due to Sue’s guidance and leadership in this area. Most recently Sue has been leading education for DCC.  This has been a challenging five years as the system has changed massively around us. However, Sue has kept the system ‘oiled’ and for the most part, whatever type of school we now work in, we are all still part of a Devon-wide system.  I would like to wish Sue a long and happy retirement.

There have been a number of changes on the DAPH Executive Committee and at the recent DAPH AGM, thanks was given to the outgoing Chair Jamie Stone, Denbury Primary School, who has headed up the DAPH Executive committee during a period of immense turbulence. Jamie remains on the Executive, taking the role of Vice-Chair. Thanks was also given to Jo Evans, St Leonards CofE Primary School, who has recently stepped down from her post. We welcome two new co-opted members, Hilary Priest from The Grove Primary School in Totnes and Penny Hammett, Fort Federation. Full details of the committee and their contact details will be uploaded to the DAPH website in due course.

By the end of this week, I think we will have all finished for the summer.  I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable summer holiday and we look forward to seeing you all back in September!

Happy Holiday!

Paul Walker, DAPH Chair
