Asbestos in schools - EFA data collection
130 Maintained schools did not respond to the recent request from the EFA to complete a short questionnaire to gather data on asbestos in schools.
The LA has been asked by the EFA to follow this up and we have been asked to remind schools concerned of the need to respond. The S U R V E Y is an excellent opportunity for schools to evaluate their approach to asbestos management.

Guidance for schools following hoax calls
Prevent have issued new guidance for schools following recent hoax calls. The new documents – which have been sent to schools as an individual letter - provide useful information and web links. There is also a model letter for parents about how schools respond to an emergency. You should review your emergency procedures following the recent hoax calls which targeted schools across the country, including two in Devon. If you require any further clarification or assistance contact the Devon Health and Safety Service on 01392 382027 or healthsafety-mailbox@devon.gov.uk
Are you looking after someone else’s child? Is your child living with another family?
If the answer to either question is yes, and the arrangement is for 28 days or more, this is known as private fostering. If a child or young person under 16 years old (or 18 if they have a disability) is looked after by someone who is not a close relative, then by law Devon County Council need to be informed. A close relative includes parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles NOT cousins, great aunt/uncles or friends.
Private fostering week takes place from 4 – 8 July this year and is helping to raise awareness of private fostering across the country. When notified, Devon County Council will work with the child, parents and private foster carer to ensure the best possible arrangements are in place for the child.
To tell us about a private fostering arrangement or if you are unsure if your situation is private fostering, please contact 0345 155 1071 or email privatefostering@devon.gov.uk.

The Cornwall & West Devon Maths Hub is looking to improve its means of communication. Having spoken to a number of headteachers, not all are receiving correspondence and there was a desire to be emailed directly. We use our mailing list to notify schools of opportunities to get involved with improving the teaching and learning of mathematics. Currently, we are looking to recruit a second cohort of teachers to become Teaching for Mastery Specialists. In addition, we are looking for schools to become part of our Mastery Work Groups, led by existing Mastery Specialists. We also update schools via our newsletter and keep them informed of certain CPD opportunities which may arise. Due to covering West Devon, we recognise that not all schools will fall within our remit, but should you wish to be included on our mailing list please use links on our website or email our Administrator, Pam Fisher, directly at pamf@truro-penwith.ac.uk .
Kind regards
Colin Bacon, Hub Senior Lead.
