Asbestos in schools – EFA data collection deadline extended to Thursday 31 March 2016

In March 2015, the Department for Education concluded a review of its policy on the management of asbestos in schools.  The outcomes from the review included the issuing of updated guidance, Managing Asbestos in your school, and a call for a clearer picture of how asbestos is managed in schools across England.

As a result head teachers are being asked to answer a small number of straightforward questions on behalf of their school. Head Teachers will receive immediate feedback and advice based on their responses.  The online questionnaire can be found on the GOV.UK website.

A good return from schools will increase the understanding of the current situation and will help to determine whether further action from the Education Funding Agency is required. Schools are encouraged to return the online form by the extended deadline of 31 March 2016

Important information on Early Help for Mental Health (EH4MH) arrangements

You may be aware that the public health grants to local authorities have been the subject of extensive cuts in 2015/16. The impact of the reduced grant for Devon has been substantial. Therefore, unfortunately, the Targeted Parenting Support for parents of primary school aged children – the third strand of the Early Help for Mental Health (EH4MH) provision – has had to be suspended. REMINDER: School Holiday Emergency Contact Details

In order for the multi-agency safeguarding processes in the MASH to be as effective as possible in protecting children, schools are being asked to provide contact details of a nominated person or persons who can be contacted by the MASH during school holidays. The nominated person will only be contacted when it is felt essential to have information from the school about the child as part of the multi-agency child protection decision making process. Please provide these details to the Education MASH Researcher Louisa.rockey@babcockinternational.com

The s175 audit in September 2016 will include a question asking schools to confirm that they have provided a school holiday contact number to the MASH.

Campaign  |  Together, we can tackle child abuse

dfe

The “Together, we can tackle child abuse” campaign has been launched by the Department for Education. Devon County Council and partners will be sharing key messages in support of the campaign to raise awareness of child abuse and encourage more reporting from the general public. The DSCB is sharing these message with its partners and we are requesting that you promote them within your organisation.

We all have a role to play in protecting children and young people from child abuse and neglect, however often people find the decision to report abuse a difficult one. It needn’t be. The reality is that information is usually gathered from many sources, and often any report made by a member of the public would form one part of a bigger picture. That said a small piece of information could be the missing piece needed, so it is very important.

If you think a child is being abused or you are concerned about their safety, then it is important to tell someone. You don’t have to be absolutely certain about whether a child is being abused; if you have a feeling that something’s not right, talk to your local children’s social care team who can look into it.

The advice to anyone in Devon who may have suspicions of child abuse or neglect is to report them to Devon’s Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) and give as much information as you can.
