Markham Vale E-Newsletter March 2025

Markham Vale - An Environment for Success

Welcome to the latest issue of our Markham Vale e-newsletter. As usual there’s lots of exciting developments to read about.

Great Businesses Need Great Locations: ARK at Markham Vale!

ARK at Markham Vale is the ideal destination for ambitious industrial and logistics businesses, offering cutting edge, sustainable spaces in a prime location.

The Ark at Markham Vale will see the construction of four new industrial buildings on Enterprise Way

The Ark

The contractor, Henry Boot Construction, is making excellent progress on constructing the four new buildings ranging in size from 17,000 sq. ft. to 36,000 sq. ft.

Soil stabilisation has been completed on part of the site thereby enabling concrete foundations to be installed on the first unit – as I write this, work has started on erecting the first part of the steel framework.

Earthworks will continue over the coming weeks to prepare the rest of the site for building construction.

Progress at the Moorings

Over at Staveley Town Basin, Triton Construction are making great progress towards completing the construction of The Moorings building.

The Moorings under construction

We were really pleased to see that The Moorings at Staveley Town Basin project was featured in the latest edition of the Chesterfield Canal Trust Cuckoo magazine.

The Moorings in The Cuckoo

We are hoping to get the keys to the new building at the end of April this year, so exciting times ahead as we work towards attracting small businesses to the new building to help to improve the local economy and create new jobs.

An important focus of the whole Staveley Waterside project is to build on the success of what we have achieved at the Markham Vale Environment Centre and maximise the opportunities offered by Staveley’s nearby location to help more local businesses start up and grow, create around 60 new jobs and contribute to a flourishing local economy. By increasing visitor numbers to the site, we also aim to increase footfall into the centre of Staveley.

Bug Hotels at Markham Vale

We have another exciting new development at Markham Vale – a pair of bug hotels!

Whilst the scale of the two hotels is much smaller than our usual type of built development, I am assured that the level of detail that went into their planning and construction was just as complex and was completed with the same amount of professionalism and care.

The bug hotels were created by the skilful Friends of Markham Vale group of volunteers and are attached to the front of the cabin where they are based at the Environment Centre.

Heartwood at Markham Vale

In last month’s newsletter we mentioned the work that is being undertaken to improve the existing woodlands at Markham Vale; these improvement works are being delivered as part of Derbyshire’s Heartwood Community Forest.

The existing woodland was planted on the North Tip some twenty years ago as one of the earlier phases of regeneration work at what was once Markham Colliery. Under this latest scheme, a further 25,259 trees are being planted; species include Maple, Birch, Hazel and Oak.

The planting area covers 23 hectares comprising existing woodland areas mostly on the north tip, but also a new area at the top of Seymour Link Road. The planting design aims to create species rich woodlands and hedgerows across the site whilst conserving some of the open space. This will increase the connectivity of the area.

The Heartwood Community Forest is being created along the eastern fringe of Derbyshire and through southern Derbyshire, joining the National Forest and linking an existing network of 15 Community Forests, which are located in and around large towns and cities.

It won’t be a single ‘forest’, but a collection of trees, woodlands, and hedgerows across Derbyshire. The location of the forest includes many of the urban areas of Derbyshire, where 77% of the county’s 797,000 population live, and where better access to woodland is most needed.

It’s also an area rich in industrial mining heritage that has shaped the current landscape. The forest will continue to enhance the schemes of physical restoration that are already underway such as the work that is underway at Markham Vale.

Derbyshire County Council are leading the project to create ‘Derbyshire’s Heartwood Community Forest’, which is funded by the 'England's Community Forests Trees for Climate Fund', supported by Defra. The Heartwood Community Forest programme offers one of the most competitive hassle-free grant schemes for tree planting. Each grant is entirely bespoke and based on the individual needs of the land and landowner.

Advice and guidance, access to funding, and project support for landowners is available to farmers, businesses, councils, and other landowners with space available to plant trees as part of the project.

Annual Jobs Surveys

Our annual Markham Vale jobs survey is well underway, and the results are starting to come in. Have you provided yours yet?

We undertake an annual jobs survey at this time of year so we can record how we are doing in developing Markham Vale and to help us to continue to bring economic and sustainable growth to the area; when completed we will share this information with you.

The survey forms a key part in measuring what is being achieved at the region's top business park and is essential information required by grant funding bodies that have helped to finance the infrastructure around Markham Vale; it also helps us to identify key areas where any further economic and skills support can best be utilised. All that we ask is that you provide details on the number of people working at (or from) your Markham Vale premises whether full or part-time.

We don’t have a prediction on what this year’s survey will show but one thing that we do know is that based on previous year’s we can rely on the businesses at Markham Vale to help us to complete the survey by providing the information. Stand by your phones and keep an eye on your email in-box!
