Exciting news for Markham Vale and Staveley

Proposals for the first phase of a new waterside development in Staveley have been submitted for planning approval by Derbyshire County Council.

Plans for the Staveley Waterside Development at Staveley Basin have been drawn-up as part of the Staveley Town Deal – a £25m Government-funded regeneration programme for the area.

Planning permission is being sought from Chesterfield Borough Council to construct a two-storey building, offering flexible space for new and existing small businesses, some retail use, and a food and beverage opportunity, with indoor and outdoor dining space, along with an access road, and mooring space.

£2.664m has been earmarked from the Staveley Town Deal fund, subject to planning approval, for the first phase of the development on the Staveley Basin site, which forms part of the Markham Vale estate – the county council’s flagship regeneration site with HBD (formerly Henry Boot Developments) off M1 junction 29a.

Councillor Tony King, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, said: “We’ve put together proposals for an exciting new development which will help to bring jobs to the area and boost the visitor economy.

“Derbyshire County Council has been working alongside partners over a number of years to improve the Staveley Basin area and the Staveley Town Deal has given us a great opportunity to turn our ideas into reality, using our expertise from Markham Vale to create high-quality business accommodation as well as a visitor destination that people from near and far can enjoy.”

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “Staveley Waterside represents a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into the area around the canal basin by creating facilities for businesses, residents and visitors.

“Enhancing the visitor experience around the canal with make it even more attractive to walkers and cyclists. The regeneration of this area will leave a lasting legacy for future generations and ensure that Staveley is a place where people can start, stay and grow.”

Staveley Waterside

Staveley Waterside is one of three projects the county council is leading as part of the Staveley Town Deal which includes 11 projects in total.

Wheels to Work is a project the county council is leading to help people in Staveley access job and training opportunities by providing bicycles and e-scooters for those with limited transport options. And the county council is also heading up a project to reinstate a railway station in Barrow Hill and create better public transport connections between Staveley, Chesterfield and Sheffield for jobs and training opportunities.

Markham Vale in music

Who knew that one of our Walking Together Mining Heritage group members was a composer?

Ex-miner Ken Wain, who is a long standing member of our volunteer group is not only a published author with two mining history books in his name but he is also now a published and recorded composer.  Ken has been working on his brass band composition titled Markham Vale for some time and a couple of weeks ago he was present at its first ever recording.  Unite the Union Brass Band reported that they had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Ken into the bandroom to hear it played.

Ken’s composition is named 'Markham Vale' in order to commemorate the colliery, in particular, it is to remember the 106 men who lost their lives in the three major mining disasters in 1937, 1938 and 1973, and to ensure the stories of the miners and their families are never forgotten.

The brass band were asked to record the march, that was arranged by friend of the band Matt Doubleday, and of course, the band were only too happy to oblige.

We can’t wait to have the opportunity of hearing the final recording and we look forward to sharing this with you all.

Markham Vale company at GB3 Championship

Markham Vale based renowned British single-seater team Hillspeed is delighted to announce a fresh two car line-up for the 2023 GB3 Championship partnered by the BRDC, today confirming Hong Kong’s Gerrard Xie and Turkish racer Daniel Mavlyutov.

The Markham Vale team, which concluded last year in winning ways with victory in the final race of the GB3 campaign at Donington Park, features a promising driver pairing for the coming season with reigning F4 Chinese Champion Xie and F4 British Championship graduate Mavlyutov.

Both drivers have linked-up with Richard Ollerenshaw’s Hillspeed squad through the Hitech GP Academy, the latter providing each racer with additional simulator and fitness training in an exciting tie-up between the two organisations.

Hong Kong’s Xie will make his UK circuit debut in GB3 off the back of dominating the F4 Chinese Championship last year. Claiming 12 race victories from 14 starts, Xie ultimately sealed the crown by more than 160 points.

Mavlyutov made his motor racing debut in the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch in late 2021 before embarking on his first full season of single-seater action last year with Hitech GP in the F4 British Championship – concluding the campaign 15th in the driver standings.

The Turk, who was born in the USA and will celebrate his 19th birthday later this month, also contested selected races in Spanish F4 last year and, over the winter, has gained further experience with Hitech GP in Formula Regional Middle East.

Richard Ollerenshaw, Hillspeed Team Principal said

“We’re absolutely delighted to confirm both Gerrard and Daniel as Hillspeed drivers for the new GB3 season, and we’re excited to be embarking on this new relationship with the Hitech GP Academy. It’s a step-up for both drivers, but they each clearly have a lot of promise and I have no doubt they will make excellent progress as the season unfolds. “As always, we will be providing the very best preparation both on and off track and I’m looking forward to seeing how Gerrard and Daniel develop as drivers. It’s set to be an exciting season and we’re very much looking forward to getting started.”

Markham Vale Fungi

This month’s photo was submitted by local resident and keen ecologist Mark Radford with the caption ‘Scarlet Elf Cup at Hall Lane Ponds.  This is the first time that this particular fungus has been seen at Markham Vale.

Mystical and cheery, the scarlet elf cup grows on decaying sticks and branches in damp spots and beneath leaf litter on the woodland floor.

Entries to win the plaudit of having submitted the Photo of the Month are welcome from everybody working or living around Markham Vale or whether you are visiting the area.  All types of subjects are welcome; they could be of wildlife, scenes from inside the buildings, of construction work, of people at work or of the landscape – all that is asked is that they are taken around the Markham Vale area.  Email your submission to peter.storey@derbyshire.gov.uk

Markham Vale company features in Grand Design magazine

Markham Vale based architects Lomas and Mitchell are pleased to share details about one of their latest projects first broadcast on Grand Designs on Wednesday 28th September 2022.

For a detailed look at the house and the story behind it visit https://www.granddesignsmagazine.com/grand-designs-houses/grand-designs-derbyshire-longhouse/

‘The majority of people build for now,’ said Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs, at the end of the Grand Designs Derbyshire longhouse episode, ‘but that’s stupid building. This is intelligent building. Their lives have changed and the building has been there, quietly waiting for them.

‘In light of the last few years,’ adds Kevin, ‘there is no better time than now to be building a house that brings people together. Several generations under one roof to share their resources. There’s no better time to build a house that connects you to the land and helps you grow your own food.

‘And there is no better time to build a house that is so low energy it costs almost nothing to run. These values are time honoured, and they are all here in this very 21st century building.’

Jillian Mitchell of Lomas and Mitchell said ‘Every project starts with a conversation – do call and see how we can help you realise your dream home’
