Markham Vale E-Newsletter April 2022

Markham Vale - An Environment for Success

Welcome to the April issue of our e-newsletter, which aims to provide a brief update on everything that is happening at Markham Vale.

Markham Vale: Regeneration at its best

We are delighted to announce that Markham Vale has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.  The judging panel have cast their initial votes and have shortlisted the Council’s entry Markham Vale: regeneration at its best in the Economic Support category of the LGC Awards 2022.

LGC 2022 Finalist

Those shortlisted for the LGC Awards 2022 are recognised as having worked tirelessly and innovatively to find new ways of supporting their communities through difficult times. The LGC Awards offer a unique opportunity to celebrate their achievements – and the current period of pandemic recovery, uncertain financial conditions and the cost-of-living crisis means the value of skilled and hard-working council staff has never been higher.

The Markham Vale site is becoming more and more successful not just due to our work but because of all the hard work and support across a range of organisations and partners – both public and private sector and also due to the fantastic support from the local and business community at Markham Vale.

Thank you to all within the Markham Vale community and well done at being shortlisted as a finalist.

The shortlisted organisations will now complete presentations and interviews to a specific judging panel made up of senior and influential figures within local government.

Sensational Performance by Markham Vale based Hillspeed

Congratulations to the team at Hillspeed Racing who are based in Waterloo Court; the company had a sensational race performance at Snetterton at the beginning of April.

Megan Gilkes produced a flawless lights-to-flag performance during the third round of the GB4 Championship partnered by the BRDC at Snetterton, to secure a historic race victory for Hillspeed – the first female winner on the inaugural weekend of the category.

Hillspeed Racing 1

Canadian racer Megan, a past winner in the W Series, was followed home by Max Marzorati to make it an outstanding Hillspeed one-two and deliver the perfect conclusion to the season-opening event for the Markham Vale squad.

Starting race three of the weekend second on the grid, Gilkes served up a textbook launch to grab the lead off the line and she never looked back on her way to an eventual winning margin of almost five seconds.

Hillspeed racing 2

British driver Marzorati, like his team-mate an eleventh-hour entry for the racing in Norfolk, secured his maiden GB4 podium with a brilliant drive to second. Set up perfectly by a remarkable start, surging from fifth on the grid to second before the cars headed through the first corner, he kept the sister car honest throughout but had to fend off Elias Adestam on a tense final lap.

Way to Work

Way to Work is a new partnership between government and employers and is a national push to help even more people benefit from the record number of vacancies that are being created.  There are hundreds of thousands of people on Universal credit that are looking to make a fresh start in work.  This means there are many talented, work ready people who are eager to take on employment.  The campaign aims to help people move swiftly back into the world of work and help businesses fill the roles that they and our economy need.

At Markham Vale, the local DWP office are offering businesses the opportunity of attending an MS Teams Meeting for them to run through their DWP Employer Offer to support recruitment.  The Way to Work offer is a new initiative to move people back in to work faster than before. DWP can offer many levels of service and they want the opportunity to talk to hiring managers about these services and to answer any questions that you may have.

Markham Vale company commission local support with their new move

BeaconMedaes

BeaconMedaes who recently moved to Greaves Close on Markham Vale East commissioned Chesterfield based SDE Group to help facilitate their move from their old site.  In order to minimise disruption to their business operations, the company required a 10 week turnaround from concept through to completion which was successfully completed by SDE Group.

BeaconMedaes required existing racking layout to be altered from a VNA (very narrow aisle) to a standard aisle due to the change of their fork lift trucks; this also required changes to the overhead lighting system to suit the new racking layout.

Other works comprised the creation of an office space from the original store room and new canteen and kitchen areas to create a comfortable breakout space for all workforces within the building.

Fashion Shoot at Markham Vale

Silk and Ember

A newly launched fashion company selected Markham Vale for the location of its very first fashion shoot.

Silk and Ember are a vintage clothing brand with a focus on sustainability.  Given the high environmental credentials of the Environment Centre - solar panels and grey water recycling of rainwater - and the backdrop of the new woodland on the reclaimed south tip, it was only natural that the company with a focus on sustainability selected Markham Vale for their first photo shoot.

The company's founders Sarah and Emily are passionate about moving away from fast fashion without compromising on style. They say 'Created for the style and eco-conscious, Silk & Ember is a passion project born out of a desire for high-quality vintage pieces. Giving new life to second hand clothes, we handpick and personally inspect every item in our range.  To ensure consistent quality and zero waste, we work on a drop-based system. Working this way allows us to carefully select our items based on the season, trends and availability.’
