Welcome to our first newsletter of 2022 which aims to provide a brief update on everything that is happening at Markham Vale, the region's largest regeneration site.

World leading company moves to Markham Vale

After spending several decades in their old site at Staveley, BeaconMedaes Limited, the world’s leading medical gas pipeline (MPGS) turnkey provider have recently relocated to a 42,000 sq. ft. facility in Markham Vale. Having outgrown their old premises in Staveley, the move indicates the growth the business has experienced over recent years.

The new facility on Greaves Close has two clear objectives for the company. First, it is an opportunity to improve logistics support by consolidating the company’s off-site storage and expanding their export stock holding, centralising export picking, and bringing their export packing in-house. Furthermore, the facility will house the company’s UK Customer Centre which acts as a global Competence Centre for HTM medical installation in the UK and across the Globe. Alongside three floors of office space, the building hosts a demonstration area and a state of the art training facility.

With the company’s move there is a real focus on sustainability and environmental improvement. The consolidation of logistics will bring a solid reduction in their road transport footprint and the use of solar panels, alongside a complete switch to LED lighting which will help them to deliver on their sustainability commitments.

Jess launched Abbey Perfumery in November 2020 with passion and enthusiasm for perfume. Having been interested in perfume for a number of years - how it evokes memories and how it can make you feel – she decided to develop her business and immersed herself in the new venture. With the support of professionals in the industry and her family she designed 12 Eaux de Parfum.

Jess says that her business values are threefold – quality, inclusivity and sustainability.

The business focuses on delivering beautiful quality, gender free and vegan-friendly perfumes made from sustainable ingredients at affordable price. Abbey Perfumery is one of the few handcrafted-perfume houses in the UK, and one of an even smaller number outside London.

Ben is the founder of Wax This Way. Living in the area for most of his life, family values mean everything to him and he runs this business based on those principles. Having previously worked in the aviation industry, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and at the start of the first lockdown he suddenly had a lot of time on his hands so he ordered a basic candle making kit. Following the step-by-step guide, he made his very first candle! Following on from that very first step he began to experiment with different waxes, fragrances and wicks which then led into wax melts. Before he knew it, he had candles and wax melts burning in every room! As time went on, he developed a brand, a company name, a logo, Facebook page and an Etsy store. Ben says ‘I still remember when that very first order came in, I practically danced around the house!’

Orders then started to flood in and the feedback was incredible. Sustainability is the beating heart of Wax This Way. Each product he makes is 100% vegan friendly. He uses plant based soy wax which is fully biodegradable and perfectly safe to use around our homes when compared to traditional paraffin wax.

Luxury new Markham Vale restaurant will have glass walls and chandeliers

Multi award-winning fish and chip company Chesters has confirmed more details about how their new restaurant on Enterprise Way will look.

"Inside has started to take shape with floor-to-ceiling vaulted roof, and a seven-metre wall made from reclaimed bricks that an artist will paint on. The shape is now showing the beautiful floor to ceiling glass and vaulted roof which chandeliers will hang from."

We understand that the restaurant when completed in June will create about 30 new jobs.

Markham Vale sponsors Celebrate Chesterfield

Destination Chesterfield’s annual Celebrate Chesterfield business event returns to the Winding Wheel on the 23rd March 2022.

Celebrate Chesterfield – organised by Destination Chesterfield, in association with The University of Derby and sponsored by Central Technology and Markham Vale – is an ideal opportunity for you to meet some of the key people who are working to achieve the goal of making the town a “modern destination.”

Attracting over 250 delegates, the annual event will update on the latest regeneration projects taking place in the town and of course plenty of time to network with other delegates. The event will also offer local business the chance to showcase what they do at the Derbyshire Festival of Business exhibition.

Annual Jobs Surveys

The Markham Vale annual jobs survey is underway!

The survey helps us to record how we are doing in developing Markham Vale and bringing economic and sustainable growth to the area. The survey forms a key part in measuring what is being achieved at the region's top business park and is essential information required by grant funding bodies that have helped to finance the infrastructure around Markham Vale; it also helps us in to highlight the vitality of the area when talking to potential businesses to locate here.

All that we ask is that businesses based at Markham Vale provide details on the number of people working at (or from) your premises whether full or part-time, permanent, temporary or sub-contracted. If you haven’t already been contacted then we will be doing so over the next few weeks!

The overall objective for Markham Vale is to create 4,100 jobs in a high-quality setting, equally we want the jobs to be sustainable and high quality. The survey that we completed last year recorded over 2,200 people in full time equivalent jobs but since then, companies have grown their workforce and a couple more companies have chosen Markham Vale – overall we think there has been a significant increase in the number of people working here but we need your help to determine exactly how many. When completed we will share this information with you.

Markham Vale Graduate Engineer is Champion of the Week.

Ros Fomin who is employed as a Graduate Engineer at MSE Systems Ltd has been selected as Champion of the Week by Destination Chesterfield.

In her interview, Ros talks about her work at Markham Vale based MSE Hiller and how the company continues to grow whilst also becoming more sustainable. She also summarises her vision for the future of Chesterfield ad North Derbyshire as well as listing the things that she already loves about the area.

All types of subjects are welcome; they could be of wildlife, scenes from inside the buildings, of construction work, of people at work or of the landscape – all that is asked is that they are taken around the Markham Vale area. Markham Vale Wildlife Group

Habitat at Markham Vale, if left unchecked, will follow five basic steps (with many more in between) Bare ground or open water – pioneer plants colonise – grasses or reeds establish – scrub begins to develop – area becomes woodland. Each habitat type has its own set of species that have adapted to thrive in that environment and as each habitat progresses through the five step cycle the area becomes less attractive then unsuitable to them. We’re trying to achieve a diverse landscape with elements of all the above but not to affect any in a negative way.

Over the past two years, the volunteers of the Markham Vale Wildlife Group, with help from Markham Vale Landscape Services (MVLS) have started to cut, rake and widen the path around the South Tip through semi mature woodland and scrub, with the aim of letting more light in and allowing wildflowers to prosper on the margins of the woodland and scrub. Woodland edge with scrub and wildflowers is very desirable to wildlife and by “scalloping” (cutting bays into the edge) we’ve doubled this resource. Since the start of this work, one of the big winners has been Dingy Skipper (a nationally scarce butterfly and Derbyshire BAP – biodiversity action plan - species); survey numbers on the transects were up by 42.4% in 2021 against a county wide decline. Overall, twenty-six species of butterfly have been recorded on the Markham Vale site.

Planning For Growth In 2022: Business Support Services

On Wednesday 16 February between 8 and 10am, the University of Derby will be holding a Planning for Growth Breakfast session at the Enterprise Centre. The session is for businesses within the region who are looking to fulfil their ambitions for 2022. Whether just starting out with a new venture or are looking to scale up an established business, attendees will be able to find out about the wealth of support available.

This is a chance for businesses to meet members of the University’s academic team as they share the latest business research and how it could impact their business. They’ll also have an opportunity to chat to their business project teams who will offer guidance on the funding and support organisations may be eligible to receive. Highlights during the event include:

Professor Mark Gilman will introduce a brand-new, free business resource, designed to offer tailored, practical guidance on how to recover and improve an organisation’s performance. This is especially important during the current economic climate.
An opportunity to hear about the provision available to help make businesses more environmentally friendly and ensure future resilience. Attendees will be able to ask the University’s experts, Dr Fred Paterson and Orla Kelleher their sustainability related questions.
Business clinic sessions for bespoke advice on funding, digital technology, productivity, skills development, innovation and much more.

There’ll also be plenty of time to browse the University’s business service stands and chat to like-minded professionals over a complimentary breakfast roll and cup of coffee.
