Self-Neglect and Hoarding Learning Event

On the 28 June 2022, Coventry Safeguarding Adults Board hosted a multi-agency learning event around self-neglect, hoarding and developing best practice.

The event featured a guest speaker, Suzy Braye Emeritus Professor in Social Work & Social Care. The recording of her presentation, 'Safeguarding people who self-neglect: What goes wrong and what goes right', was recorded and is available on our website.

Recorded presentations are also available from Enabling Spaces, an independent occupational therapy service specialising in Compulsive Hoarding, and West Midlands Fire Service.

Hoarding Services and Resources

We have created a one-page poster with links to sources of hoarding advice, support and resources.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

The Home Office have produced a resource pack including:

  • case studies where FGM has been experienced by girls and women in the UK
  • information on what local authorities and others can do to raise awareness of FGM in their local area
  • links to support organisations, clinics and helplines which can help people who think they might be at risk

Access the pack.

Liberty Protection Safeguards

We are closely monitoring developments associated with the implementation of Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) which will provide protection for people aged 16 and above who are, or who need to be, deprived of their liberty in order to enable their care or treatment and who lack the mental capacity to consent to their arrangements.

The Draft Code of Practice is available and can be accessed online. Public consultation on the new law concluded on the 14 July 2022 and the DHSC will now have a period of reviewing the feedback received. There is no indication so far of when the implementation process will begin.

If want to know more about the proposed changes, please the guidance issues by the Department of Health and Social Care, or information on the Coventry City Council page.

We also held a learning event on Liberty Protection Safeguards - What we know so far. Access the video.
