Herbert Protocol

The Herbert Protocol is a form aimed at protecting people who have dementia or Alzheimer’s.

It can be filled in by carers, family or friends of a person who could go missing at any time and encourages them to hold information about the person that can help the police find them as quickly as possible and return them to safety if they do go missing.

Access the form and more information on the Herbert Protocol.

Fire Service safe and well checks

Safe and well

Safe and well visits are an important part of the West Midlands Fire Service prevention activity. It enables them to advise and educate on safety at home, with a particular focus on vulnerable residents.

Learning Disability Awareness Learning Event

The Coventry Safeguarding Adult Board recently held a Multi-Agency Learning Event: Learning Disability Awareness. This was presented by representatives from Coventry and Warwickshire CCG, CWPT’s Community Learning Disability Team, Grapevine and People with Lived Experience.

The recording of the event is available in two parts:

Safeguarding Adults Reviews (SAR)

A Safeguarding Adult Review, or SAR, is a multi-agency process that considers whether or not serious harm experienced by an adult (or group of adults) at risk of abuse or neglect, could have been predicted or prevented.

The process identifies learning that enables the partnership to improve services and prevent abuse and neglect in the future.

Further details on criteria and the process can be found on our webpage or concise details in our SAR One Minute Guide.

We have also produced a Safeguarding Toolkit for professionals to use as a guide when deciding if an individual case meets the criteria for a Safeguarding Adult Review.

Carers Assessment One Minute Guide

We have produced a One Minute Guide for Carers and Young Carers.

Anyone can be a carer, including children from the age of 5 and adults who look after family, partners or friends who have care and support needs and the guide aims to highlight:

  • The roles and responsibilities of carers.
  • The issues that can arise from a carers' role.
  • The Carers Assessment and Self-Assessment available that can lead to support for carers.

View the Carers Assessment One Minute Guide.

Self Neglect One Minute Guide

We have recently produced a Self Neglect One Minute Guide.

Self-neglect can be a wide range of behaviour neglecting to care for one's personal hygiene, health or surroundings and includes behaviour such as hoarding. In the guide we have included:

  • Potential reasons individuals self-neglect,
  • Indicators,
  • Challenges of working with those self-neglecting,
  • Best practice and enquiry tips.

We have also linked to the West Midlands Self-Neglect Guidance which includes further useful tools and information for practitioners working with those who self-neglect.

Escalation Policy

The Coventry Safeguarding Adults Board has an escalation policy for all partners to use in the event of a professional disagreement.

This procedure identifies a non-exhaustive list of potential areas of disagreement,
guidance on preventing disputes and procedures to be followed when disputes
cannot be resolved through discussion and negotiation between professionals at
front line level.

Access the Escalation Policy.

Liberty Protection Safeguards

We are closely monitoring developments associated with the implementation of Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS) which will provide protection for people aged 16 and above who are, or who need to be, deprived of their liberty in order to enable their care or treatment and who lack the mental capacity to consent to their arrangements.

They are expected to come into Force in April 2022, replacing Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).

If want to know more about the proposed changes, please the guidance issues by the Department of Health and Social Care, or information on the Coventry City Council page.
