Coventry Safeguarding Children Partnership

March 2021

Welcome from the Independent Chair

DB

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the latest edition  of the CSCP newsletter, which as always contains a wealth of useful and timely information; ranging from our most recent One Minute Guides through highlighting Child Exploitation Awareness Week, promoting tools to help your day-to-day practice and signposting upcoming webinars.

I hope you and yours are well, and without getting ahead of ourselves, that we can look forward to meeting in person again before too long.

Best wishes,

Derek

One Minute Guides

msp

Our One Minute Guides are quick, first reference guides aimed at front line practitioners across the city.

The Partnership has produced a One Minute Guide on learning from a recent Serious Case Review on the subject of Criminal exploitation, as well as our previous guides on County Lines and Contextual Safeguarding. We have also produced guidance on best practice when having difficult conversations with children.

Child Exploitation Awareness Week

In line with National Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness Day on 18 March, the Partnership and Partner Agencies will be sharing content from 15 March - 19 March on the wider subjects of Child Exploitation and Extra-Familial Harm.

The week will consist of social media posts on County Lines, Gangs and other forms of harm, One Minute Guides for professionals and the launch of the CSE screening tool.

We are asking partners to use the image below as a Microsoft Teams background, to raise awareness of the week. To do this, right click the photo below and Save as picture. Then select it from your documents under the background filters option.

CE Screening Tool

The Coventry Safeguarding Children Partnership are creating a new Child Exploitation Indicator Tool that will replace the existing Child Sexual Exploitation and Child Criminal Exploitation screening tools. These screening tools are used when professionals across the city consider a child or young person under 18 to be at risk of exploitation.

The new Indicator Tool has been developed by a multi-agency group of Coventry safeguarding partnership agencies to ensure it is easy to use and understand. It will help practitioners look at the indicators of exploitation and make a professional decision about risk using the Signs of Safety framework.

The new Child Exploitation Indicator Tool is currently within the testing phase, with the intention of launching it in mid-March. A webinar including demonstration of the tool, pathways to submit the screening tool and an opportunity to ask questions will be held on Monday 15 March, with details below:

Webinars

We will be holding webinars each day of Child Exploitation Awareness Week highlighting the particular theme of the day:

Monday 15 March - Overview of Exploitation

Tuesday 16 March - County Lines

Wednesday 17 March - Gangs / Serious Youth Violence

Thursday 18 March - CSE Awareness Day

Friday 19 March - Recap of the week

Invites and joining links have been shared by email. If you haven't received an invite you can use the links above to join each session.

NSPCC #SpeakOutStaySafe Campaign

safe

The NSPCC has created a virtual #SpeakOutStaySafe assembly to educate children on what abuse is and to empower them to speak out. They need help to make sure it is in every school and seen by every child.

The Safeguarding Together Action Group (STAG)

Meeting

One year from its creation, we would like to again invite those keen to keep up to date with safeguarding developments across the city to our STAG Group.

This is a great opportunity to encourage cross-agency working, upskill through training presentations on a range of topics, look at the effects of action on front line practice and to identify emerging safeguarding issues and themes.

The group meets 3/4 times per year with the next group taking place on Thursday 11 March 2021 from 9am-12pm via Microsoft Teams.
