Introduction from the Independent Chair

Derek B

The Safeguarding Partnerships Team have been working hard throughout the coronavirus crisis to keep partners, practitioners and our communities informed, and to to provide them with details and contact numbers of support services. We hope that the information in our latest newsletter is useful and will help to keep people safe and well.

What making safeguarding personal means to my agency

uhcw

The work of UHCW is underpinned by six values compassion, openness, partnership, pride and learning all closely akin to the principles of Adult Safeguarding. Every patient is an individual with unique needs and this is reflected in the way they are cared for. Each patient is empowered and supported as much as possible to make their own decisions. Where patients lack mental capacity, decisions are made in a collaborative way in the persons best interest and are person-centred. Decisions are proportionate to manage risk while giving the person as much freedom as possible.

Finding out what is important to the person by talking to them, their representatives and from their hospital passport or “getting to know me” form is central to getting things right for them. It is imperative that people feel safe and protected while in the hospital environment and have their individual needs responded to. The Safeguarding Team work closely with the Dementia, the Learning Disability Liaison and the Patient Safety Teams to make this happen. Over 95% of staff are compliant with their Adult Safeguarding Training and additional training is being rolled out Trust wide by the Safeguarding Team around the use of the Mental Capacity Act.

Safeguarding is everybody’s business and every staff member and volunteer is accountable for their own actions as individuals and as part of our compassionate organisation.
