Guidance for schools on management of pupil attendance

Guidance for schools on the management of pupil attendance

This practice guide on the management of attendance outlines the support schools can expect to receive from the LA with regards to its statutory responsibilities as well as support via the Attendance Traded Offer. The document also sets out the legal position regarding compulsory education and guidance on what schools should be doing to promote pupil attendance levels as well as strategies to remove the barriers to learning and improving overall school attendance.

Please contact Jameel Mullan with any questions or queries - jameel.mullan@coventry.gov.uk

Fixed penalty notices

As agreed at July’s partnership meeting, all fixed penalty notices (for leave of absence/irregular attendance) that have been paid from September 2019 – December 2019 have been sent via data locker to all Headteachers for your reference and records.

Please share this with staff in your school who have responsibility for attendance.

Schools will receive notification of trial outcomes after each case is heard in court.

We endeavour to share updates on FPN’s three times in an academic year (end of half term 2,4 and 6).

Should you have any queries or questions in relation to the data shared, please contact Viv Blinco (024 7697 5434).

Coventry Term Dates - 2021/22

2021/2022 term dates consultation

Under Section 32 of the Education Act 2002 in the case of a community, voluntary controlled or community special school or a maintained nursery school the Local Authority is required to determine the dates when the school terms and holidays are to begin and end, and the governing body is required to determine the times of the school sessions.

Governing bodies are required to set term and holiday dates in foundation and voluntary aided schools. The academy trust is responsible for the duration of the school year and term and holiday dates for academies and free schools. The Local Authority believes that a standard set of holiday dates adopted by all Coventry schools will be better for school attendance, the organisation of admissions to Year R/Year 7 and for parents and carers arranging childcare and transport. The two options for consultation match to what Warwickshire will be also be consulting upon. If you require any further information please contact education.consultations@coventry.gov.uk.
