CPOMS survey

At the DSL meeting held on 12/3/2019 the work taking place in relation to CPOMS was shared with attendees. Several schools both primary and secondary have recognised the issue that legacy categories are having upon being able to easily access CPOMS incidents from previous schools after pupils’ records have been transferred.

A working party have met twice; one of the meetings was with representatives from CPOMS. CPOMS are happy to work with Coventry schools to try to overcome the issues caused by the legacy categories. The working party are happy to continue to work on behalf of schools across the city but would like some assurance from a large majority of schools that use CPOMS that continuing to pursue this work is needed and that any proposals/changes made to improve CPOMS usability would be supported.

Please can you complete this short survey, the deadline for submitting the survey is: Monday 25 March 2019.

I promise that completing the survey should not take any longer than five minutes at most.

Single point of contact - gangs, child criminal exploitation, safeguarding

ChildExploitationSPOC@coventry.gov.uk

This email is monitored by Angie Bishop in her role of Single Point of Contact for information sharing in respect of gangs, knife and violent crime and child criminal exploitation, the email is also monitored by Hazel Kelly Child Exploitation Coordinator. Any concern for a child, young person or their family can be shared here if it relates to this area of concern.

It is not an immediate operational response email and if the concerns are immediate then a MASH referral should always be made. All information provided may be used to inform the city wide multi-agency mapping exercise and professionals will be signposted to support, advice and guidance from this email.

We ask that people using this email send their contact details, the name of the person they are concerned about, a brief and concise summary of what has lead them to be concerned e.g. younger sibling of person associated with gangs coming into primary school and displaying concerning behaviour. No direct contact will be made with the family as a result of this email, this will only happen when a MASH referral is made.

The accident and incident reporting process is to change

Incident reporting is currently carried out through a system called SHE ASSURE, but following a procurement process, the contract has been awarded to a supplier called ‘Alcumus Info Exchange’. They have provided a system, which allows the organisation to retain an electronic reporting tool, which in turn has allowed us to make cost savings.

The SHE ASSURE contract ends on 30 March, and access to the Alcumus Info Exchange system will begin on 1 April.

The Health and Safety Team and HR/OD Digital Team will be holding 30 minute information sessions throughout March and April, which will include a system demonstration, and hints and tips which may help you.

To book your place please contact OnlineLearning@coventry.gov.uk

Further communications will be published on 1 April, including links to access the system, and in depth guidance to support you throughout the process.

Discussing a terrorist attack with Primary children

The attack in Christchurch, New Zealand is likely to be discussed by students and teachers in schools across the UK and beyond. It can be difficult to ensure these conversations are conducted in a calm, thoughtful and rational way, but we must try. Talking about subjects such as terrorism can ignite wider discussions about politics, history or prejudice, which are so important in helping young people understand the world around them.

The overwhelming advice seems to be that teachers and parents should be proactive in these conversations, not reactive. There is a huge amount of information for children and young people to absorb after shocking events such as this, and adults can help make sure they feel able to talk about any confusion and fears.

Schools need to provide a safe space where terrorism is discussed openly, so that students can understand what it means and develop the knowledge required to challenge inaccuracies. Good-quality resources are crucial, the following are some sources of information as to how to approach the topic of terrorism with pupils
