Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy – regional roadshows (Coventry event - 7 March)

On 28 January the Department published the Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy and the Early Career Framework

The Strategy sets out for the first time our offer to the profession to make sure a career in teaching continues to be attractive, rewarding and sustainable.

We will be hosting roadshows in all regions to discuss the Strategy and would like to invite you to join us. We are particularly interested in meeting with senior leaders of schools and academy trusts and representatives from local authorities and dioceses.

At the roadshows, you will have an opportunity to:

  • find out more about the strategy
  • collaborate with peers to find strategies that you can apply in your own schools
  • discuss how to deliver the strategy in your local area
  • share your feedback on how we can build on the proposals in the strategy

PSHE/RSE health and wellbeing survey form for completion by PSHE school leads

Evidence shows that well-delivered PSHE programmes have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

The Government has committed to making the health education and relationships education/RSE aspects of PSHE compulsory from September 2020.

CGL Positive Choices have been asked by Coventry City Council to update the current PSHE/RSE and Drug and Alcohol session plans which will be hosted on the “BeSavvy” website.

We would therefore like to enlist the support of the schools PSHE leads to support ourselves by completing the survey and returning to: coventryyp.info@cgl.org.uk.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) one day course

We are delighted to confirm one free place for Secondary (including Secondary Special and PRU) schools on a Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) one day course, funded by the Department of Health for a member of staff.

Date:  27 March 2019

Time: 8.45am - 5pm (prompt start and finish)

Location: Caludon Castle School, Axholme Rd, Coventry CV2 5BD

By attending the Youth MHFA one day course, candidates will develop practical skills to identify a range of mental health issues and support a young person to get the help they need. The course will provide an understanding around the issues that relate to young people’s mental health and will boost their knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues on a first aid basis. Senior staff are usually best placed to attend as they are then able to establish a 'whole school approach'.

Please identify one person in your school to attend the course and send the following details to antonia.sharpe@mhfaengland.org: full name, school name, job title, email address, course date and venue and contact telephone number.

World Book Day and 200 million minutes

Libraries are offering a number of World Book Day events and after-school activity sheets for the public – please could you advertise in newsletters or give out to children.

Thank you for the support we have received for “Create your own EBook”.  We received a number of stories from children and young people aged 7-15 and these will be available to view and borrow via the Library Services Borrowbox online catalogue from World Book Day on 7 March. The stories will also be displayed at Central Library, Smithford Way, Coventry.

For younger children in nursery and reception, if parents/carers join their children to the library they can receive Bear’s Reading Adventure Book and two stickers to start them off.

If schools are taking part in the 200 million minutes reading campaign children can join the library and borrow books and talking books for free.  From April 2019, there are also no fines on children’s items for 0-15 year olds. They can also join in with our storytimes which are usually held after school and at weekends.

SACRE monitoring

SACRE will be conducting RE monitoring visits for the remainder of this academic year. We will use Ofsted and SIAMS (Church Schools) reports to offer support to schools where RE or SMSC has been highlighted as a development area. SACRE would also like to offer you the opportunity to request an RE monitoring visit. This might be particularly useful for you to provide an external view in the following circumstances:

  • You are expecting an Ofsted/SIAMS inspection soon
  • RE is on your development plan
  • You currently have nobody leading RE within your school setting

To request a visit, please email Jennifer Jenkins (RE Facilitator for Coventry and Warwickshire) at Jennifer.Jenkins@coventry.gov.uk.
