Updates

Public Health England (PHE) and Business in the Community (BITC) have co-produced an evidence based toolkit to help employers support employees affected by domestic abuse and raise awareness on the issue. In the UK, nearly two million people experienced domestic abuse in the last year alone. One in four women and one in six men suffer from domestic abuse in their lifetime, having detrimental effects on their lives and costing businesses £1.9 billion every year due to decreased productivity, time off work, lost wages and sick pay.

You can view the Domestic Abuse toolkit here.

PHE has published the Work, worklessness and health: local infographic tool, which includes a slide set with regional and local level data relating to work, worklessness and health for each county or unitary authority in England.

Coventry & Warwickshire Year of Wellbeing

The Year of Wellbeing campaign is looking for people with a story to tell about something they’ve done to improve health and wellbeing – for themselves, their team, their customers or their communities.

Our 'champion' story-tellers can be anyone, in any role, at any level in an organisation or outside of it. Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking:

  • Someone who works in a different way and has changed their workplace to improve health and wellbeing.
  • Someone who encourages fitness or healthy eating and actively gets others involved.
  • Someone with lived experience who has used that experience to help themselves and others feel better.
  • Someone who provides health and wellbeing help and support to others over and above their role.

If you have a story to tell please email Jane Coates at janecoates@warwickshire.gov.uk

Local events and campaigns

As summer is here and the holiday period is approaching, this impacts slightly on the Wellbeing Calendar, as there are less national awareness days than usual. The NHS have put together a selection of national campaigns and awareness days to help you plan your health and wellbeing strategy and activities for the year ahead. Scroll through their interactive calendar.

Hydration

Why not promote the importance of staying hydrated to your staff during the summer months. The hydration council provide clear advice on how much we should be drinking.

 UV. It All Adds Up

“Anywhere you go UV will damage unprotected skin. And it just keeps adding up.”

We usually think of sunburn as something that happens at the beach. But did you know more of us get sunburnt during day-to-day activities like hanging the washing, weekend BBQs or heading outside to grab lunch?

Cycle to work

Cycle to Work Day 15 August 2018

Cycle to Work Day is the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event. Every year since 2012 we’ve seen thousands of enthusiastic riders hit the streets to celebrate everyday cycling. All you need to take part is a bike – new or old – and the desire to ride. You can go solo or be the change your workplace needs and organise an event for you and your colleagues. Whatever you do, however far your ride – have fun!  See website.

Coventry Sports Week

Coventry City Centre will be transformed this summer with a variety of activity zones for a week of sport, physical activities, events and display performances for the whole family.

Sports Week will take place between Tuesday 14 and Saturday 18 August from 10am until 4pm each day in Broadgate. It will feature a wide range of activities designed to encourage more local people to take part in sport and physical activities. Free sessions aimed at children and young people will be led by a range of community organisations and professional sport clubs. Find out more.

Bowls Business Networking

This is a completely different type of business networking where participants talk business while playing a casual game of bowls. Absolutely no bowls experience is necessary and all you need is a pair of flat soled shoes with no heels e.g. trainers. Basic instruction is provided, then pairs of players have the opportunity to talk about their business and discover customer/supplier matches within each other's personal networks. After ten minutes everyone moves on and starts the conversation again with another player. The outdoor environment and active participation in a simple game facilitates a very relaxed opportunity to discuss business. For further information and to book your place contact BowlsBizNet

Save the Date - Coventry Half Marathon returns for 2019

The run will be held on Sunday 24 March, when around 3,000 people are expected to hit the city’s streets to aim for personal bests and raise tens of thousands of pounds for local charities.
