Health and social care improvement team
As a result of the increased awareness of health and wellbeing in adult social care during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Care Inspectorate has set up the health and social care improvement team. This multi-disciplinary team based within the strategy and improvement directorate will lead and develop aspects of our health and social care quality improvement support functions. The team’s improvement advisers will work closely with inspectors, supporting learning and development in specific topic areas, and keeping the evidence base of practice current.
Film in care
The film in care resource has been developed in collaboration between researchers at the University of Dundee and the Care Inspectorate. In 2016, Dr Ana Salzberg and Dr Jenna Breckenridge were funded by the Carnegie Trust to do a research study on the impact of social film screenings in care homes. Ana and Jenna ran film screenings in two care homes. They observed how residents engaged with the films, ran discussion groups with residents and interviewed care home staff. Their research developed a set of core principles for using film in care most effectively, to improve residents’ wellbeing.
In 2019-20, Ana and Jenna collaborated with the Care Inspectorate to develop this resource. A further four care homes ran a series of improvement projects where they tested out the researchers’ core principles. Over a period of six months, staff in each home used an improvement cycle to try out film screenings, evaluate how these went, and share lessons about how the core principles could be improved. The four homes shared their learning at three workshops where they worked together to refine the core principles and co-design this resource.
The resource has now been updated to reflect how to use film as a meaningful activity in Covid-19 conditions. It will be published in June 2021. Jenna has made a short video about the project which you can watch here.
Meet our chief nurse
My name is Jane Douglas and I have recently been appointed to the post of Chief Nurse with the Care Inspectorate, which I commenced in March. The role, which is a new role, sits within the Strategy and Improvement Directorate. As the Chief Nurse, I provide clinical leadership to the Care Inspectorate and specialist clinical and professional advice. I will be working to influence national policy and strategy in regard to social care and the social care workforce.
I have experience working in social care and social work, having been a provider and a commissioner, therefore I have good insight into the issues and challenges that the sector is facing.
I am especially interested in the role of the nurse in care homes, the uniqueness of the role and how it has changed over the last decade. Equally, I am interested in other roles within social care and how these are developing because of the challenges that we are faced with to provide safe, effective care, in the right place, at the right time, by the right person.
