Roadworks embargo for Christmas period
Cheshire West and Chester Council has arranged a roadworks embargo for the Christmas period to keep the festive season running smoothly.
There is a suspension of all non-essential roadworks in Chester city centre and all major towns and major retail outlet areas across the borough until 11.59pm on Sunday 5 January 2025.

Council progresses plans for electric vehicle infrastructure
Cheshire West and Chester Council has received good news regarding its Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) scheme.
The Council has now secured approval from the Department for Transport (DfT) and has started the procurement for a service provider (Charge Point Operator) to deliver the LEVI scheme.

St Anne Street junction improvements
Cheshire West and Chester Council improvement works continue on the St Anne Street/St Oswalds Way junction in Chester.
The improvement works are due to restart on Monday 6 January.
The scheme includes improving active travel and local safety measures with segregated crossing facilities installed around the full junction. The scheme improves accessibility and connectivity across the busy St Oswalds Way by including a new signal crossing to the Chester Bus Interchange.
The works will also replace old equipment and upgrade traffic signals equipment making them more energy efficient and replacing end of life equipment.
A full road closure of the junction of St Anne Street (with no access onto St Oswald’s Way) will be in place for the duration of the works. There will also be lane closures on St Oswald’s Way dual carriageway in place throughout the works.

Hooton section of the Wirral Way now open again after improvements
Cheshire West and Chester Council has now re-opened the stretch of the Wirral Way from Hooton to Heath Lane after completing improvement works there.
The works formed part of and complete the recent 50th Anniversary, celebrating the Country Park.
The project has reused and recycled materials to create the new path surface, as well as railings, edging and a new bench – retaining some of the railway heritage of the area.

Green gritting
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Highways team is winter ready to keep the road network running smoothly during the colder months.
The Highways Service and its maintenance contractor, Colas, are always ready to tackle the coldest weather conditions.
The fleet of 16 gritting trucks, keeps 515 miles of roads safe for drivers, using 70 tonnes of rocksalt for each gritting run to treat key routes across the borough –the same weight as 10 elephants.

Water supply improvements Sandy Lane, Chester
Severn Trent’s £16million project to install a new 3km water pipe in Chester and secure the future of the city’s network for generations to come has been completed.
The 11-month project has seen Boughton Water Treatment works connected to Huntington Water Treatment Works and the team is keen to thank residents for their patience and support throughout 2024.
A small amount of remedial work needs to take place on Jubilee Fields, and this will be done in the New Year.

 itravel on-demand rural bus service
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s on-demand rural bus service, improving connectivity in some of the more remote parts of the borough. ‘itravel’ covers a wide area including Helsby, Frodsham, Delamere and Acton Bridge, as well as some other villages, where no commercial services are available.
The bus service can be booked online, using a mobile phone app, or phone call, which allows a resident, or group of residents, to request a bus for a specific journey.

 Chester Park and Ride is FREE during January
If you are visiting Chester in January why not take advantage of this fantastic offer. Regular buses operate until 7pm (5.30pm Sundays).
The offer applies to day tickets obtained on bus only and is not available for Park and Ride tickets purchased through the Stagecoach app
Travelling in to Chester for work or leisure? Park and Ride operates from Upton, Boughton Heath and Wrexham Road. Free parking, with discounts for groups now available. Buses operate three separate circular routes direct into the city, then back to your car park.

Get around for £3 until the end of 2025
Single bus fares to be capped at £3 until the end of 2025, ensuring services remain affordable and supporting travel in rural areas and towns.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has worked with operators to encourage as many as possible to participate, although some services will not be eligible.
Journeys starting in Wales are not eligible for the scheme, however local concessions have been introduced by some operators.

Report It App
Last months storm saw over 50 call-outs to remove fallen trees which were blocking roads and footways, and damaging property.
The Council's Report It App is available from the Apple store and Google Play, once you have downloaded and installed the app you will be able to report issues such as:
- problems with roads e.g. potholes, street lighting
- fly tipping
- dog fouling
- full bins

Grid/gullies work programme
38,505 grids (gullies) have been cleaned over the past twelve month cleaning programme.
There is an online interactive map to see when the gullies were last drained or report a blocked gully.
