 What is the Middlewich Eastern Bypass?
Welcome to the first edition of our Middlewich Eastern Bypass newsletter.
Construction of the bypass is now well underway, with work taking place across the site to prepare for the new road and bridges that will form part of the scheme.
The bypass will help reduce congestion, improve journey times and support future growth in the town. Through these quarterly newsletter, we'll keep you updated on progress, upcoming works and opportunities to learn about the project.
The project is being delivered over the next two years on our behalf by Balfour Beatty.
It will provide:
- A new road to the east of Middlewich, helping to reduce traffic through the town centre
- New and improved junctions to make it easier and safer to travel around the area
- New bridges over the canal and railway line
- New walking and cycling routes
- Improvements to support new homes and local businesses
- Better connections to key routes, including the A533
Since the main works began in May, the project team has made good progress preparing the site. This has included setting up the main site compound and offices, installing fencing along the route, and building temporary roads to allow construction vehicles to move safely around the area.
Work has also started on the new bridge over the railway line, which is one of the most significant parts of the project.
Over the coming months, you may notice an increase in activity across the site. Work will continue on the new bridges, while teams begin preparing the ground for the new road and installing drainage systems.
Temporary routes within the site will also be completed to help support construction as work progresses.
Some works will affect local roads, and we will always aim to give as much notice as possible, so you can plan ahead.
There are currently traffic lights and a reduced speed limit in place on Cledford Lane while works are ongoing. Traffic lights will also be introduced on Booth Lane and Pochin Way at later stages of the project.

Working with our community
As part of the project, our construction partner Balfour Beatty is working with local schools and the wider community to create learning and career opportunities.
Students from Middlewich High School have already visited the site to learn more about construction and engineering, and work experience placements have also been offered to local young people.
This work will continue over the coming months, including taking part in the Crewe and Nantwich Pledge Careers and Education Fair in September.
The event - which is being held at Cheshire College South & West in Crewe - is aimed at young people and their families. It will provide an opportunity to learn more about local jobs, training and career pathways.
