How can you reduce your stress level in just 6 minutes?
If you guessed 'read a book', give yourself a pat on the back!
Reading for just 6 minutes reduces stress levels by 68%, which makes it more effective than listening to music, having a cup of tea, talking a walk, or playing video games.
Researchers at Mindlab believe the concentration needed when reading helps distract the brain away from anxious and stressful thinking, which reduces your heart rate and the muscle tension caused by stress.
So, next time you feel overwhelmed, pick up a book and feel the stress slowly melt away. Nothing to read? Visit your library, dive into our online catalogue, or download e-books and e-audiobooks from BorrowBox.

Did you know that with an NHS login you can order repeat prescriptions, book and manage appointments, get health information and advice, view your health record securely, or view your NHS number?
Once you have an NHS login you can use the freely available NHS app or the NHS account online to access a wide range of health and care websites.
If you'd like some help to get started by creating a login or downloading the app, ask a member of library staff or book a session with one of our IT Buddies.
The NHS have created a short video explaining how to create a login, what features are available on the NHS app and account, and how to use them.

Our strategy for how libraries could be run in the future
An updated strategy for how our libraries could be run in the future will be considered by the council’s environment and communities committee next week following feedback from a public consultation.
We recently consulted on a draft version of our 2024-28 libraries strategy. It sets out how our libraries service will continue to meet the needs of local communities while remaining affordable in the context of our current financial position.
We've reflected on all feedback received through our public consultation. In doing so - and through partnership working with town and parish councils and local community organisations - we've been able to make some positive updates to our strategy.
This includes proposing smaller reductions in opening hours for some of our sites, while in some cases, we are now able to keep the opening hours as they are now.
There are also some proposals we're not moving forward with at this stage due to feedback.
