Welcome to the August edition of our Family Hubs and Start for Life newsletter!
The monthly theme for July is 'Sun, Water and Travel Safety'. We will be highlighting some of the key areas to consider when keeping your child safe in warmer weather and also how to promote safety in the water if you are using the swimming pool or visiting the beach.

Loud by Rose Robbins
This 'getting ready for school' book allows children with ADHD to empathise with the main character who also displays signs of neurodiversity.

RNLI Seaside Safety Song
Song Lyrics:
Choose a lifeguarded beach if you're going to the sea,
Stay between the flags, it's a safer place to be,
If you get in trouble just float like this,
Use your arms and legs like a big starfish!
Sensory Play
A day at the beach naturally lends itself to all sorts of sensory play, however some children may dislike the feeling of sand on their skin so this clever hack might make your day a little easier. Keep little ones safe from the sun and their toys sand free by using a double fitted sheet as your play area.

Sun Safety
It's never to early to talk to your child about keeping safe in the sun. Many high street brands have developed child friendly applicators for sun cream and this can be a great way to encourage independence before starting school. Alternatively, you could show your child how to apply sun cream using a clean dry sponge to make it easier to spread evenly.
The Cheshire East Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF) enables children and young people who are in receipt of income/benefits-related free school meals who live in Cheshire East or attend a Cheshire East school, to attend free activities during the main school holidays, where nutritional food is also provided.
Booking an activity session is easy! All families need to do is visit the Cheshire East HAF programme booking platform.
17. Potion Making
We all remember making petal perfume and how many hours this would keep us entertained for. Well this is a really fun and engaging activity provide some old bowls, jars and spoons and a jug of water and see what potions / perfumes you can create. Encourage imaginative play and pretend to be witches and wizards making spells or jus create your own.
Water Safety for Children
Summertime walks around a lake, beside a river or along the canal can be a wonderful experience for children, but it's very important they learn to stay safe on these visits when next to the water. This useful graphic from the Canals and River Trust outlines the key message to 'Stay Away From the Edge'.
