Helping children to enjoy reading starts at a very early stage. Cheshire East libraries staff have been trained by Speech and Language Therapists in how to support new parents in communicating with their babies and pre-school children.
Cheshire East libraries provide enjoyable sessions for children and their carers every week. They are a great way to meet other people both for the children and the adults.
Starting with Baby Bounce, intended for babies up to 12 months and their families. we encourage new parents to help their babies with the very earliest communication through face to face singing, rhythm and rhyme. For children who are starting to get mobile, Rhymetime takes place in every library, each week. Stories and Songs are interactive story telling sessions for pre-school children where they can also enjoy some singing and fun activities to help bring the story to life.

Cheshire East Libraries are launching our exciting new initiative, especially for children who are due to start primary school and their families. We have called this ‘Let’s Get Ready for School’.
There are ten different ‘Let’s Get Ready for School’ book bags available to borrow. Each bag contains 4 picture books which have been specially selected to share with younger children to help them to cope with change and prepare them for school. These include a wordless picture book for parents and children to enjoy creatively together. The bag also contains a useful leaflet which was co-written with early years Speech and Language Therapists and includes some practical ideas for supporting children’s communication at this important stage. BookTrust have kindly provided a little finger puppet and an ideas leaflet for helping to bring the books to life.
The book bags are free to borrow and available at your local library. They can also be reserved online with your library card.

Feedback from a delighted teacher:
'I just wanted to email and say a massive thank you from myself and all the children. We had the BEST day and the children were absolutely buzzing about it all day. ... I really hope we can come and visit again and bring some of our other classes to help share the wonderful work you all do at the library. A massive thanks again.'
During a class or group visit, children are introduced to the library and everyone is given the opportunity to join. Library staff talk to the children about how to use the library and where to find the books. They chat to the children about their favourite books and authors, encourage enthusiasm and make book suggestions. Children are then given time to select and borrow a book. We always get great feedback from the children, so if you would like to arrange a class visit, please get in touch with your library.

1 in 6 adults in the UK struggle with reading and 1 in 3 adults do not regularly read for pleasure. England ranks 23rd out of 23 OECD nations for literacy level amongst 16-19 year olds. In addition, studies have shown that those who do read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations.
Quick Reads is a collection of books available through the library service. The books prioritise great story telling for adults, and are written in an accessible and easy to read style. They are written by some of the most popular authors in the UK, including Andy McNab, Jojo Moyes, Anne Cleeves, Ian Rankin and Benjamin Zephaniah, so they can be a brilliant entry point to new genres and authors, as well as the spark to reignite or build up the joy of reading.
Please search the library catalogue for 'Quick Reads' or ask the library staff to help you.

If you would like to share your views on what you are reading and listen to other people's opinions, why not join a book club? To find a group, please ask at you library for details of local clubs. Some reading groups take place in libraries where everyone is welcome, free of charge. This is what a couple of our members said:
'Joining the reading group takes you out of your comfort zone'
'...a book club makes your read books you wouldn’t normally read, some you’ll love, some you’ll hate and some you’ll sit on the fence with!'
Remember that you can borrow your reading group books from the library. Just search the catalogue online, and place a hold. You will be notified when the book is ready to collect from your chosen library.
And if you are curious to know what library staff like to read, follow our Facebook page. Each week a member of library staff shares a book they love. Every library has their own Facebook page so it is also a good way of keeping up to date with news and events.

There is a collection of books in large print at every library. They offer a range of both fiction and non-fiction. These can be very helpful when someone has difficulty reading ordinary sized print or is visually impaired. Many titles are published in ordinary and large print simultaneously, so we have new books as well as classics.
If you are unable to travel to the library to chose your books, libraries have a home delivery service. This is for people who have difficulty getting out and about and don't have anyone who can come to the library for them. Please ask the library staff for more information.

If you have never tried reading a book on your phone, tablet, PC or device, maybe now is the time to try. Libraries offer all members the chance to download the BorrowBox app and borrow books for free. For avid readers, eBooks are a great alternative.
eAudiobooks can be enjoyed in the car, when on the move and are also really valuable for people who struggle to read print.
