Works are due to begin to construct a new access road and bridge for Chelmer Waterside. Planning permission was granted for a new bridge to be constructed in June 2021 and this will provide a key access route for the new neighbourhood.

Over the next few weeks you will start to notice some changes in the area as the team starts with the construction work. This includes:
- Establishing site compounds in Baddow Road Car Park and the former Gas Works site (off Wharf Road).
- Diverting some of the footpaths and cycleways that are necessary to create a safe construction site. Signage will be installed along the routes, which have been approved by Essex County Council.
- The dismantling and storage of the Bailey Bridge. A small section of the River Chelmer will be temporarily closed whilst this part of the work takes place.

The history of the Bailey Bridge |
|
The Bailey Bridge based at Chelmer Waterside has a unique and interesting history stemming from World War II.
The bridge was designed in 1940 and most likely used during the war effort. Following the conclusion of the war, the bridge was purchased by the Council in September 1946 at a cost of £250 from the UK Government. This was then installed for the purpose of being a walkway for persons to cross the River Can, providing a crossing from Baddow Road to Kings Head Meadow Car Park, a car park that was used for people to visit the then town centre or cinema.
The bridge was relocated to its current location in 1992.
The council will remove the bridge and store it safely until a new location is found for it.
