Independents' Day UK Weekend 2023

Celebrate Independents' Day UK Weekend 2023 this weekend on the 1st & 2nd July. Independents' Day UK is a campaign that exists to support and promote independent retail businesses across the UK. Independent retailers offer choice, diversity of product and service, tradition as well as innovation. Independent retail businesses also play an important role in creating jobs and contribute significantly to local and national economies.

Many of Chelmsford's independent retailers are small businesses, employing no more than four people. Chelmsford is ranked second in the country as a leading hotspot for entrepreneurs, start-ups and very small businesses . Chelmsford has long been recognised for its thriving micro-business community and remarkable entrepreneurial spirit.

Both Chelmsford Markets and Hylands Estate comprise of a wide variety of microenterprises - both new and established businesses. This e-bulletin puts a spotlight on a small number of these businesses in celebration of Independents' Day UK.

Handmade by Han

A wide range of artists studios are based at Hylands.

Hannah Winter creates mixed media pieces using items from her collection of treasures such as vintage papers, stamps, buttons and shells. She also works in watercolour and coloured pencil and makes small needlefelted gifts. Hannah sells cards as well as original artwork.

Mona Marnell Glass Studio

Mona Marnell is an established glass artist who exhibits and sells her work through galleries and from her studio based at Hylands. She works to commission, creating bespoke glass art for residential and commercial spaces and she also offers a range of popular stained and warm glass workshops throughout the year.

Hawthorn Heavy Horses

Based at Hylands Park since 2008, Hawthorn Heavy Horses specialise in woodland management and provide Carriage Rides for events and in the holidays. The horses can be booked for Carriage Tours of Hylands or for an experience day. Find out more online and on Facebook.

The Toy and Wool Stall

Chelmsford Indoor Retail Market has a variety of stalls and kiosks, from clothes and fabric to vegetables and flowers run by individual traders. Jay, a longstanding Market Trader, runs The Toy and Wool Stall, selling an excellent range of baby clothes, toys, wools, groceries, sweets and household items.
