MCCIP has just published the latest rolling update on climate change effects on ocean circulation.
This update has been led by Dr Gerard McCarthy from the Irish Climate Research and Analysis UnitS (ICARUS) in the Department of Geography at Maynooth University, Ireland. It contains further discussion around weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), examines its potential instability, and discusses the consequence of AMOC change for the UK and Ireland.
The update also discusses other changes in basin and shelf circulation features in the European Shelf Seas and recommends how to address issues to improve the ocean observations and simulations of the shelf region.
See below the key issues covered, and the link to the summary page on the MCCIP website containing the headlines and a downloadable copy of the full report.

OCEAN CIRCULATION
Key issues:
- Latest updates on the observed strength of the AMOC
- Changes to subpolar gyre and freshwater fluxes
- Observing and modelling European shelf sea currents
- Potential regional-scale effects on temperature, precipitation, storminess, extreme water levels, and biogeographical shifts
- Tipping points and decadal forecasts
