In 2012, MCCIP published a series of scientific reviews looking at the implications of climate change for fish, fisheries and aquaculture in the UK seas. Since then, there have been significant developments in our understanding of climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture, the role these industries can play in achieving net zero, and the wider policy context.
MCCIP has now published 3 new policy briefs, framed around the climate change mitigation and adaptation objectives in the UK Fisheries Act 2020, and the policies to achieve those in the 2023 Joint Fisheries Statement. These outputs are UK focused and refer to the wider global context were relevant. The briefs discus ‘net zero fisheries and aquaculture’, ‘adaptive fishing fleets’, and ‘sustainable aquaculture production’, drawing on the latest evidence and advice.
These briefs, along with some further considerations for management in a changing climate (e.g. marine spatial planning, MPAs, fisheries management plans and transboundary issues) are supported on the following MCCIP webpage:
Find below short summaries and links to the full version of each of the briefs.

HOW CAN THE UK MARINE FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE SECTORS SUPPORT NET ZERO?
Progress is being made on emissions reductions, but major changes in production, processing and transport are needed to realise Net Zero ambitions by mid-century.

HOW DO WE BUILD ADAPTIVE CAPACITY IN UK FISHING FLEETS?
In some UK regions, fishing fleets rank amongst the most vulnerable to climate change in Europe. There are many adaptation options, at sea and in-port, to build resilience of the UK fleet.

HOW CAN WE MANAGE CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON UK MARINE AQUACULTURE?
Mariculture is a rapidly growing industry in the UK, with ambitious plans for continued expansion. Developing our understanding of climate change risks can help support the sustainable growth of this sector in the UK and encourage greater efficiency in the international supply chain.
