In today's update:
We are aware from discussions with Providers that many of you are experiencing difficulties in recruiting suitably qualified early years staff and know that this reflects a wider national problem. The Early Years Alliance are running a survey on this to inform their discussions with the Department for Education. If you wish to complete the survey, it is open until the 5th November.
Please ensure that you are displaying the latest poster for parents, about Ofsted’s role and responsibilities and the different ways parents can get in contact.
We have been asked by Ofsted to share the following reminder with all registered Early Years Providers:
You must notify Ofsted, or the childminder agency with which you are registered, of any confirmed cases in the setting, whether a child or a staff member. Settings should also tell Ofsted if they have to close the setting as a result. It is a legal requirement as set out in paragraph 3.52 of the early years foundation stage statutory framework. You should report as soon as they are able to, and in any case within 14 days. Settings can see ‘tell Ofsted if you have a COVID-19 incident at your childcare business’ to ensure that all the required information is included in their notifications.
On 1 October 2021 the requirements for labelling pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) food changed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
PPDS food is food that is packaged at the same place it is offered or sold to consumers.
Any food business that produces PPDS food will be required to label it with the name of the food and a full ingredients list. Allergenic ingredients must be emphasised within this list.
For most early years settings, PPDS will not be prepared on site and this new requirement will not be applicable. However, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have produced detailed guidance for education settings, including nurseries, on what food is classed as PPDS and what should be included on the food label.
Poverty permeates every area of a child’s life. When we surveyed families in Cumbria last year, financial issues were one of the top concerns they had that affect their children.
June Sullivan CEO of the London Early Years Foundation will explain what must be done to tackle this national crisis and why radical reforms to our childcare system are so urgently needed so that all children, regardless of their backgrounds, can get the best start in life.
