For attention of Primary Head Teachers - FURTHER UPDATE

Dear Colleagues,

As you are aware we wrote to the DfE yesterday setting out the latest situation in Cumbria regarding rising infection rates and recommending to them that Cumbria, in particular Carlisle and Eden, were added to the National DfE contingency framework for the first 2 weeks of term.

I have now had a formal response from them (which is attached) and this reaffirms the national commitment to implementing policy for primary schools for the start of this term, meaning they are expecting all schools in Cumbria to open as set out by the Secretary of State on the 30 December. The letter attached also sets out a process, and their commitment, to the regular review of this approach relating to Cumbria with a planned review this week which I will ensure happens.

As head teachers and with your governing bodies you will have key decisions to make in managing your schools. Officers from the county council including the learning and improvement service, health and safety and public health will all remain on hand to support you this week.

Finally, as ever, can I thank you all for your continued commitment and collaboration at this tremendously difficult time.

Yours,

John Readman
