Latest update for all schools - 1 June

dan barton

Dear All,

As many schools across Cumbria move into the next phase of reopening to some year groups from today, I would like to thank everyone for all the work you will be doing over the next two weeks and for all the effort which you have put in over half-term to prepare for this next phase.

I am extremely grateful to all the teachers and staff who are working so hard to ensure all pupils are supported at this time, whether in or out of school.

With many thanks,

Dan Barton, Assistant Director - Education and Skills
Cumbria County Council

The 'team around your school' contacts poster update

As part of our education recovery planning, colleagues from within CCC have been working to develop a 'single team around the school' contacts poster for every school. We are pleased to confirm that these posters have been developed for every cluster/consortia. They are now going through final QA by a number of Headteacher colleagues, before being made available to you in the next few days. As more schools reopen, we will prioritise getting them to you this week. The poster will include the name and contact of the cluster GA who will assist you in coordinating service area support from CCC partners where required.

EHCP risk assessments

Colleagues will be aware that the new government advice for children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is that, where they are in the year groups returning to school, they should have the same opportunity to attend as their peers. Those  already attending, should continue to do so and schools should consider widening the opportunity to attend for children with an EHCP.

The key factor for these children in determining their attendance continues to be their individual risk assessment which should identify whether their needs can be more safely met at home or at school. The risk assessment should be kept under review. We provided schools with a risk assessment template and the majority of schools have returned their completed assessments. However, for those who have not, as this is a key time for reviewing them, can we ask that the updated assessments be provided to the Local Authority for those schools that have not yet returned them? School colleagues should refer to the most recent government advice here.

Update to guidance on recording attendance

There is some further guidance today from the DFE on recording attendance in the school attendance register during the coronavirus outbreak:

  • For year groups where the school is still closed the X code should be used
  • For year groups who have returned if a child is shielding or self isolating the Y code should be used, for illness other than Covid-19 the normal I code should be used and if parents are choosing not to return their child to school at this time but they are not ill or self isolating the C code should be used.

Read the full guidance here.

Reminder to update your school portal

A reminder that you must update your own school portal to reflect when your school is closed.  To update this information please go to the sharepoint portal and update the open/closed date using the closure widget.

Reminder to complete school survey

A reminder to complete our short survey and return it today, if you have not already done so.

This data will provide us with an overall projection of provision in Cumbria, which we can share with the DfE and will also assist in providing further support where required.
