German and Italian Prisoners of War at Moota

With grateful thanks to Gloria Edwards and Cockermouth Heritage Group for the following article:

The Moota Prisoner-of-War Camp, between Cockermouth and Aspatria, opened in 1942. It housed Italian POWs initially, until Italy surrendered to the Allies in September 1943. Their places at Moota were taken by German POWs for the remainder of the war and, from 1946 onwards, by Displaced Persons from Eastern Europe.

Both Italian and German POWs worked in the local area, mostly on farms, during the day, returning to the Camp at night.
