SEND Improvement Programme paused due to COVID-19

Message from Dan Barton, Assistant Director for Education and Skills at Cumbria County Council and lead officer for the Cumbria SEND Improvement Programme

Dear All,

The whole country is currently engaged in a national effort to combat the global coronavirus pandemic.  Given these unprecedented circumstances, we have taken the decision to pause the SEND Improvement Programme, only in the short term, for practical reasons.

Many of the people leading the SEND work are now involved in work to protect lives and ensure vital services continue. We would like to assure you that our operational priority is to ensure that children and young people with SEND are kept as safe as possible, and that their families and carers are supported at this time.

To ensure that we maintain some momentum with the Improvement Programme we will:-

  • Review the Written Statement of Action to evaluate the impact of COVID-19
  • Continue to have Parent/Carer Reference Group meetings in virtual form
  • Hold monthly virtual meetings with those Working Group Parent/Carer Representatives who are able to do so and wish to stay in touch
  • Hold monthly virtual meetings with Working Group Chairs

The aim of these activities will be firstly to help us understand what is needed now, and secondly to ensure that when we have adjusted to our new normal, we will be able to speedily resume making progress on SEND improvements.

I will keep you updated as the situation develops.

Yours

Dan
