COVID-19 case numbers back up again

Over the last week (week ending 26 January), new cases of COVID-19 in Central Bedfordshire have gone up by 647 to 3,428, a rate of 1,166 cases per 100,000. Infections are now rising among 5-10-year-olds and remain high among 11-17s and 30-49s. The number of people in hospital locally has gone down a little but sadly there were 9 deaths in the last reporting week.

Case numbers among our neighbours are also up:

  • Bedford – 2,660 new cases, up 482 (1,523 per 100,000) with 7 deaths reported
  • Luton – 2,894 new cases, up 279 (1,355 per 100,000) with 8 deaths reported
  • Milton Keynes – 3,735 new cases, up 473 (1,382 per 100,000) and 5 deaths reported

The government has announced that the legal restrictions put in place under plan B in England will be lifted.

However, COVID-19 has not gone away and remains a risk.

You should continue to follow safer behaviours to protect yourself and others:

  • Get vaccinated and get your booster dose
  • Wear a face covering in most indoor public places and on public transport
  • Let fresh air in if you meet indoors. Meeting outdoors is safer
  • Test yourself regularly and particularly before meeting other people, and
  • Self-isolate if you test positive or have symptoms
