Case numbers down but higher than two weeks ago

New cases of COVID-19 have fallen this week but are higher than two weeks ago and remain over 1,000. The number of people with COVID-19 needing hospital care has gone up and sadly there were two deaths here in the last reporting week.

Over the last week (week ending 28 July), cases in Central Bedfordshire have gone down by 546 to 1,074 new cases (372.1 per 100,000).

Among our neighbours, cases are also down:

  • Bedford - 593 new cases (342.2 per 100,000) with 1 death reported
  • Luton - 650 new cases (305.1 per 100,000) with 2 deaths reported
  • Milton Keynes – 777 new cases (288.4 cases per 100,000) and 2 deaths reported

The fall in case numbers is welcome but it is too soon to know whether this will continue, especially as it does not yet reflect the impact of restrictions being lifted on 19 July. The level of new cases remains extremely high, and we have heard from the NHS that the pressures on local hospitals are increasing.

Coronavirus remains a serious health risk and you should stay cautious to help protect yourself and others.

  • Meet outside, or open windows and doors for indoor visitors
  • If you think you have symptoms stay at home and take a PCR test
  • Wear face coverings in crowded places and on public transport
  • Check in to venues when you go out
  • Wash your hands with soap regularly, and for at least 20 seconds
  • Get vaccinated if you’re 18 or over
