Latest figures show another significant increase in cases of COVID-19 in our area.

Over the last week (week ending 9 June), cases have increased by 55 to 178 new cases (61.7 per 100,000), the highest number since March.

Cases are also rising in our neighbours and while our case numbers remain lower than Bedford and Luton nearly all cases here are now the Delta variant.

Thankfully there were no deaths here or in our neighbours last week while the number of people arriving in hospital with COVID-19 is small but rising.

  • Bedford - 273 new cases (157.5 per 100,000) with no deaths reported
  • Luton - 206 new cases (96.7 per 100,000) with no deaths reported
  • Milton Keynes - 138 new cases (51.2 cases per 100,000) and no deaths reported

Cases are on the increase in many parts of England now as the Delta Variant spreads. We do not want to see a third wave of the pandemic so we all need to play our part to control the spread.

Always remember

  • Hands – keep washing them regularly or use sanitiser
  • Face – wear a face covering
  • Space – keep two metres apart from others
  • Fresh air is best – meet others outdoors or open windows if inside
  • Test regularly – use a rapid test before you meet others
  • Isolate – if you have symptoms get a PCR test immediately and isolate
  • Vaccinate – vaccination is effective so get yours as soon as you can

The good news is that COVID-19 vaccines have already saved 13,000 lives and stopped 39,000 people being hospitalised with Covid-19 in England and the evidence is that they provide good protection against new variants of the disease, including the Delta variant.

To date, most of those in hospital have not been vaccinated or had only one dose, with very few fully vaccinated.

Vaccination is your best line of defence against COVID-19, to protect you and others around you. It’s also the best way to end the restrictions and get back to normal.
