Weekly figures

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Central Bedfordshire (in the week ending 12 May) was 54, down 5 from the previous week (59). The number of weekly positive cases per 100,000 population has gone down to 18.7 from 20.4 last week.

As well as understanding the situation in our area, it is also important to consider the latest data from our neighbouring areas which are as follows:

  • Bedford - 146 new cases (84.3 per 100,000). 2,663 vaccinated and 1 death reported
  • Milton Keynes - 55 new cases (20.4 cases per 100,000). 5,698 vaccinated (last 7 days) and no deaths reported
  • Luton - 67 cases (31.4 per 100,000). 2,202 vaccinated, with no deaths recorded

Sadly, there has been a significant increase in cases in Bedford, some of which are the new Variant of Concern (first identified in India).

Bedford Borough is currently the 5th highest in the country for COVID-19 cases per 100,000 in the population.

As many Central Bedfordshire residents work, visit or go to school in Bedford, we are urging everyone to be cautious and exercise common sense.

Bedford Borough are carrying out additional testing of close contacts of those testing positive to identify any further COVID-19 positive cases, ensure people know to self-isolate and help slow the spread.

The rise in cases in Bedford Borough is mostly among people aged under 40, with the highest increase among those aged 11-22. In Central Bedfordshire, we have also seen a similar trend in the ages of those testing positive in the last seven days.

This is a reminder that even with more restrictions easing next week, we must take this next step safely.
