Cheering our volunteers with new award categories and grant scheme

For 2020, the Central Bedfordshire Cheering Volunteering Awards and Celebration will be virtual – but the recognition will be real.

The awards, organised by Central Bedfordshire Council, working in partnership with the Volunteer Centres as part of Central Bedfordshire Together, is our chance to say thank you to those who give their time to help others.

Sponsored by Ringway Jacobs, Pro Logis, Grand Union Housing, Jeakins Weir and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue, the awards are devoted to recognising and applauding the efforts of volunteers across the area. This year a special COVID-19 award has been created and nominations are invited for individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to support their communities, and particularly vulnerable residents through the pandemic.

Another special award for 2020 is The Captain Sir Tom Award for Outstanding Contribution by an individual. Many people give unselfishly of their time and effort without realising that they are volunteering. Too often these people go without any recognition of the difference they have made to people's lives. This award is for an individual that has made a difference to you or someone you know and has had a very definite, positive impact by going the extra mile.

The closing date for nominations is 5pm on Friday 20 November and details are available at our website www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/cheering-volunteering. The awards celebration will be available to watch in December.

To support community action during the pandemic, we have launched a special COVID-19 grant scheme. Local voluntary and community groups who want to do more to support those who have been adversely affected by the virus can apply for funds via their local Central Bedfordshire Councillor and unlike the existing scheme, bids for the additional funds do not require match funding.

Dozens of neighbourhood groups, as well as more established voluntary and community organisations, have been crucial in helping residents through the challenges of the pandemic and particularly those who are the most vulnerable.
